The number of suicides among police officers over the past five years from January 2018 to October 2023 is 124. An average of 20.6 people commit suicide every year. By city/provincial police agency, the highest number is in the order of 27 in Seoul, 22 in Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police, and 11 in Gyeongnam Office. However, most police officers working in 18 city/provincial police agencies are under stress due to police work, and this leads to suicide. There are quite a few police officers thinking about this. of the 124 suicide deaths over the past 5 years, the highest number were local police (62), investigators (12), and police department (8). The causes of suicide among police officers are due to police duties, personal factors, and health. In order to analyze the causes of suicide among police officers who commit suicide due to stress caused by police work, literature research methods and data from interviews with police officers while lecturing as a suicide prevention education instructor were used as supplementary materials. This study examines the current status of suicide among police officials and proposes prevention measures for suicide among police officials, such as activating police suicide prevention education, expanding the Police Mind Companion Center, and increasing the number of professional counselors.

2018년 1월부터 2023년 10월까지 최근 5년간 경찰공무원 자살 현황은 사망자가 124 명이다. 한 해 동안 평균 20.6명이 자살을 하고 있다. 시ㆍ도경찰청 별로는 서울 27명, 경기남부 22명, 경남경찰청 11명 순으로 높게 나타나고 있지만 18개 시ㆍ도경찰청에서 근무하는 대부분의 경찰공무원은 경찰 업무 등으로 인해 스트레스를 받고 있으며 이로 인해 자살을 생각하고 있는 경찰공무원이 적지 않다. 5년간 자살 사망자 124명 중 지역 경찰은 62명, 수사 12명, 경무 8명 순으로 높게 나타나고 있다. 경찰공무원의 자살 원인 은 경찰 직무, 개인적 요인, 건강 때문이다. 경찰업무 등으로 인한 스트레스로 자살을 하는 경찰공무원의 자살 원인을 분석하기 위하여 문헌연구방법과 자살예방 교육 강사로 강의를 하며 경찰관들을 면담한 자료를 보조적으로 활용하였다. 이 연구에서는 경찰공무원의 자살 현황을 살펴보고 자살에 대한 예방 대책으로 경 찰 자살예방 교육 활성화, 경찰 마음동행센터의 증설 및 전문 상담사 증원 등 경찰공무 원 자살에 대한 예방대책을 제시하였다.
