Which political parties various social groups support in democratic countries in an important research topic in political science. Through empirical analysis, this study attempted to find the direction and intensity of party support of social groups classified according to demographic characteristics in Korean. Research questions to address this topic are as follows. First, which political party does the social groups categorized by demographic characteristics support and what is its strength of support? Second, which social group changes its support for political parties? Does the change of support take place between political parties, or does it support the preferred party at some times and flow into the nonpartisan class at other times? Third, which social group's change in support affects the rise and fall of each political party's approval rating? The analysis subject of this study is the party approval rating of the two major parties, the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party. This study utilized a total of 233 opinion polls conducted by Gallup Korea every week from May 2017 to May 2022.

민주주의 국가에서 다양한 사회집단이 어느 정당을 지지하는가는 중요한 주제다. 본 연 구는 한국 사회에서 인구통계학적 특성에 따라 분류된 사회집단들이 가지는 정당 지지의 방향성과 강도를 경험적 분석을 통해 밝히고자 했다. 이 주제를 다루기 위한 연구 질문은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인구통계학적 특성별 사회집단은 어느 정당을 지지하며 그 강도는 어 떠한가? 둘째, 어떤 사회집단이 지지 정당을 변경하는가? 그 지지의 변경은 정당 간에 이루 어지는가 아니면 어떤 시기에는 선호 정당을 지지했다가 다른 시기에는 무당층으로 유입 되는 특성을 보이는가? 셋째, 어떤 사회집단의 지지율 변화가 각 정당의 지지율 상승과 하 락에 영향을 주는가? 이 연구의 분석 대상은 양대 정당인 더불어민주당과 국민의힘의 정당 지지율이다. 연구의 대상 시기는 2017년 5월부터 2022년 5월까지이며, 이 시기 한국갤럽이 매주 수행한 총 233회의 여론조사 결과를 활용해 실증적 분석을 수행했다.
