The purpose of this article is to empirically identify the process of Nakagami’s visit and stay in Korea/Seoul and to reveal its significance. In doing so, I hope to identify the reasons for the failure of Monogatari Seoul. To this end, I have filled in some missing facts about his visit, stay, and related activities that cannot be found in existing materials or papers. He tried to appropriate Korean traditions and folklore through structuralist and semiotic approaches, and saw the kimbap restaurants, grandmothers’ dance floors, and alleyways of Yeongdeungpo as the potential for a new world order. However, he never met and interacted directly with the victims of discrimination in Korea or entered their lives. In 1980s Korea/Seoul, he met with influential figures in the cultural world through Jeon Oksook, encountered foreign students of Korean descent and Japanese publishers, wandered through alleys, and attended traditional folk performances. He was able to enter the alleys of Korea through the direct or indirect patronage of the then Fifth Republic regime, but he was preoccupied with playing with the semiotic/cultural meanings of the alleys and overlooked the people who actually lived.

이 글의 목적은 나카가미 겐지의 한국/서울 방문과 체류의 과정을 실증적으로 규명하고 그 의의를 밝히는 데 있다. 이를 통해 『이야기 서울』의 실패가 어디에서 연유한 것인지를 확인해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 그의 방한과 체류, 관련 행적에 관해서 기존 자료나 논문으로 확인할 수 없는 일부 누락된 사실에 입각하여 보완했다. 그는 한국의 전통과 민속을 구조주의와 기호학적인 접근을 통해 전유하려 했다. 또한 <국풍 81>의 김밥집과 할머니들의 춤판, 영등포의 골목을 새로운 세계질서를 주도할 준주변부의 가능성으로 보고자 했다. 하지만 그는 한국의 피차별(부락)의 당사자들과 직접 만나 교유하거나 그들의 생활에 직접 들어간 적이 없었다. 그는 1980년대의 한국/서울에서 전옥숙을 매개로 문화계의 유력 인사를 만나고 재일조선인 출신의 유학생 및 일본의 출판관계자와 조우했으며 골목을 배회하고 전통 민속공연의 현장이나 관제행사에 참석했을 뿐이었다. 그는 당시 5공 정권의 직간접적인 후원을 통해 한국의 골목에는 진입할 수 있었으되 그곳을 기호학/문화론적으로 의미부여하는 유희에 급급했을 뿐 정작 그 속에서 실제로 생활하는 피차별의 부락민들을 간과했던 셈이다.
