This article examines the nature of the ‘Bocheongyo's Handgun Incident’, whichhas been known as a independence movement of Bocheongyo. To this end, theoutline of the ‘Bocheongyo's Handgun Incident’, the history and actions of ChoMan-sik and Jeong Chan-gyu, and the aspects of the related statements related tothe case were reviewed. For this study, the interrogation records of the‘Bocheongyo's Handgun Incident’ were carefully examined. And Japaneseinformation documents, newspaper, and documents from the Government-Generalwere used. The results of the study are as follows. First, the project of this case was not ledby Bocheongyo, but by members of society such as Cho Man-sik, Lee Chun-bae,and Jeong Chan-gyu. Second, Cho Man-sik and Jeong Chan-gyu were quitepro-Japanese, and they were secret operation persons that tried to break downindependence movement organizations such as the Provisional Government of theRepublic of Korea. Third, according to interrogation records, Cho Man-sik andJeong Chan-gyu initially responded in the direction of destroying Bocheongyo, butlater responded from the standpoint of protecting Bocheongyo when the intentionwas not fulfilled. In conclusion, the 'Bocheongyo's Handgun Incident' in the mid1920s was a case that the Japanese Government-General of Korea attempted to fallapart the Bocheongyo, but did not succeed. It is believed that the JapaneseGovernment-General of Korea sent secret agents to break up Bocheongyo byinducing Bocheongyo to conduct an independence movement in connection with theJeong-eui-boo(正義府), but it did not accomplish the goals because of wise ofmoves by Bocheongyo leaders like Cha Gyeongsuk.

이 글은 1920년대 중반 보천교가 정의부와 연계하여 권총을 갖고 독립운동자금을 모아만주에 독립운동근거지를 건설하려 한 사건으로 알려진 ‘보천교의 권총단 사건’의 성격에대하여 검토한 글이다. 이를 위해 ‘보천교의 권총단 사건’의 개요를 살펴보고, 조만식과 정찬규의 이력과 행적을 고찰하고, 관련 인물의 사건 관련 진술의 양상을 고찰하였다. 이 연구를 위해 ‘보천교의 권총단 사건’의 신문조서를 꼼꼼히 살펴보고, 일제의 정보문서와 신문자료와 총독부 문서 등을 활용하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 이 사건의 기획은 보천교가 주도한 것이 아니라 조만식·이춘배·정찬규 등 사회인이 주도한 것이다. 둘째 조만식과 정찬규는 친일적 면모가 상당히 있고, 대한민국임시정부 등 독립운동단체를 와해한 활동을 전개한 밀정이었다. 셋째신문조서에 따르면 조만식과 정찬규 등은 처음에 보천교를 와해시키려는 방향에서 답변하였으나 의도가 관철되지 않자 나중에는 보천교를 보호하는 입장에서 답변하였다. 결론적으로 말해 1920년대 ‘보천교의 권총단 사건’은 일제의 보천교 와해기도 실패 사건이었다. 일제가 보천교에 밀정을 보내어 보천교가 정의부와 연계하여 독립운동을 하도록 유도하고그 죄를 물어 보천교를 와해하려 하였으나, 차경석 등 보천교의 지도부가 현명하게 대처하여 실패한 사건으로 판단된다.
