The identity of Catholic in Ireland implies violent coercion with authority beyond mere religion. In Ireland’s unique political, historical, and cultural environments, the Catholic has been endowed with political power in collusion with the public opinion of the middle class, and compelled its people to blind obedience, while ignoring its roles of guiding people to the spiritual world, providing peace and salvation through compromise and harmony, or healing of trauma. In this paper, we attempt to analyze the identity of Irish Catholic through the reading of three representative Irish nationalists Yeats, Heaney, and Barry.

아일랜드에서 가톨릭이 차지하는 위치는 단순한 종교 이상의 권위와 함께 폭력적인 강요를 의미한다. 아일랜드 특유의 정치적, 역사적, 문화적 환경 속에서 가톨릭은 저급한 중산층의 여론과 결탁하여 정치적인 권력을 누리면서 구성원들에게 맹목적인 복종만을 강조할 뿐 숭고한 정신세계로의 인도, 타협과 화합을 통한 평화와 구원의 달성, 트라우마의 치유 등 원래의 종교적인 역할을 수행하지 못한다. 이 논문에서는 아일랜드의 대표적인 민족주의자 예이츠와 히니, 그리고 베리를 통해 아일랜드 가톨릭의 정체성을 규명하려고 한다.
