In this paper, I examine the actual life and achievements of General Im Gyeong-eop, a figure who symbolizes the sense of loyalty in the Joseon Dynasty, and contrast this with the image of a general who opposed the Qing Dynasty and sought to restore the Ming Dynasty, a defender of the nation depicted in the classic novel Im Gyeong-eop-jeon. And, I looked at it and discussed the meaning of loyalty depicted in the work. Im Gyeong-eop-jeon is not a novel of Im Gyeong-eop's actual life, and is mostly filled with fiction. In the novel, Im Gyeong-eop is portrayed as the rescuer of the Nanjing Ming government, which is trying to rebuild the Ming dynasty against Qing Dynasty. Im Gyeong-eop also became a hero who preserved Joseon Dynasty by completing the mission of returning the Crown Prince and his brother who were captured to the Qing Dynasty during the Manchu War. Through this process of shaping, Gyeong-eop is sublimated into a symbol of loyalty and a national hero. Im Gyeong-eop showed the utmost in living a life of loyalty and belief in the country, but it shows that changing reality is difficult. As today's readers look back on the sense of loyalty and dedicated activities depicted in Im Gyeong-eop-jeon, need to think about that an awakened individual should be able to protect the lives of himself and his family by observing changes in reality and trying to find the truth.

임경업은 17세기 명･청 교체기라는 역사적 전환기에 충절의 삶을 실천 하여 조선과명 정부가 처한 국가적 위기를 극복하려 한 인물이다. 이 논문에 서는 병자호란을 전후로 임경업의 실제 삶과 공적에 대해 살피고, 이를 고전소설 『임경업전』에 그려진 장수 형상과 대비해 살펴보았으며, 작품에 그려진 충절의식의 의미에 대해 논의하였다. 임경업은 충주 단월 출신이며, 의주 백마산성을 쌓아 전란에 대비하였고 병자호란 이후 명을 위해 싸웠으며, 나중엔 명에 망명하여 열정적으로 반청복명(反淸復明) 활동을 한 충절의 장수로 기억된다. <임경업전>은 임경업의 실전을 표방하고 있지만, 대부분 허구로 차 있다. 소설에서 임경 업은 호국에 맞서 명나라를 재건하려는 남명 정부의 구원장으로 그려진다. 임경업은 또한, 호국과의 전쟁이 일어나기 전에 성벽을 보수하여 무비(武 備)를 철저하게 했으며, 병자호란 때 볼모로 잡혀간 세자와 대군을 환국케 하는 임무를 완수함으로써 충절의 표상이자 국가적 영웅으로 승화된다. 임경업은 국가에 대한 충성심과 신념을 지키며 사는 삶의 최대치를 보여 주었지만, 현실을 변화시키는 것은 어려운 일이라는 것을 보여주기도 한다. <임경업전>에 그려진 임경업의 충절의식과 삶을 돌아보면서, 깨어 있는 개인은 현실의 변화를 살펴 진실을 찾으려 애쓰며, 자신과 가족의 삶을 지킬 수 있어야 한다는 점을 생각하게 된다.
