This study aimed to investigated the material characteristics of the mortar used in the Goguryeo stone chamber at Tonghyeon-ri, Yeoncheon. Analytical methods such as microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and hydrochloric acid treatment were employed. The analysis revealed that the mortar comprised lime and fine sand. Additionally, organic matter, suspected to be of plant origin, were detected internally, presumably added to enhance durability. Major mineral constituents detected were calcite, aragonite, and pyroxene, with high contents of CaO, MgO, and loss in ignition. These components reflect the raw material characteristics of the lime used in the production for the mortar and the geological elements specific to the Yeoncheon region.

본 연구에서는 연천 통현리 고구려 석실분에 사용된 모르타르의 재료적 특성을 파악하고자 하였다. 분석방법으로는 현미경 관찰, X-선 회절분석, 적외선 분광분석, 열중량/시차주사열량분석, X-선 형광분석, 염산 처리 등을 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 모르타르는 회와 미세한 크기의 모래가 혼합된 것으로 나타났다. 또한 내부에는 초본류로 추정되는 유기물이 확인되었는데 이는 내구성을 보완하기 위해 첨가한 것으로 판단된다. 주요 구성 광물로는 방해석, 아라고나이트, 휘석이 검출되었고, CaO, MgO 함량, 작열감량이 높게 나타났다. 이러한 성분들은 모르타르 제조에 사용된 회의 원재료 특성과 연천 지역의 지질학적 요소들이 반영된 것으로 생각된다.
