『Jikam Yeongeon(直菴永言)』 written by Jikam Tae-hwan Cho (趙台煥, 1772 to 1836), who lived and worked actively in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do around the 19th century, has been recently discovered and reported. 『Jikam Yeongeon』 was edited in 1826 and contains two Gasa of and and 206 Sijo, all of which are new and had been unknown in the existing academic world. Among the 206 Sijo, 184 are pieces written by Jikam, and the rest are response Sijo written by Deok-yu Jeong (鄭德裕, 1795 to 1829) and Seok-bin Lee (李碩彬, 1795 to 1832), who were Jikam’s pupils. 12 of them are from Deok-yu Jeong and 10 are from Seok-bin Lee. Jikam's 184 Sijo can be divided into Dohak Sijo, Gyohun Sijo, Eunil Sijo, and Gihaeng Sijo. Among them, 89 Sijo are Gihaeng (travel) Sijo, which account the most of his Sijo and contain journeys to scenic places and experiences, observations, and impressions from them. The traveled sites are concentrated in the Gyeonggi and Chungcheong regions, and most of his works were written while visiting Seowon, castles, pavilions, and historical sites of old dynasties or family clans. While Jikam's Gihaeng Sijo includes 9 pieces of Yeon Sijo, , about Hwayang Gugok of Songnisan Mountain, he usually used the scenic spots he passed through while traveling in an area as his topics and wrote 2 to 3 pieces of Danhyeong Sijo in the form of shorter Yeon Sijo. The contents of Sijo mainly reveal the excitement along with the description of the scenery when he arrives at the scenic spot, but his consciousness differs depending on the various scenic places. While thoughts on Confucian ideology appear as well as reverence for ancestors when he visited in Seowon areas, he mainly reminisced about the old dynasties and subjective reflections on historical events at historical sites. Furthermore, he expressed feelings of remembrance for ancestors at their ruins. 『Jikam Yeongeon』 can be defined as one of the three major gentry Sijo collections from the 19th century and will be considered as a useful material in revealing the flow of Sijo history before and after the 19th century. In addition, the method of composing literature with both Gasa and Sijo together is usually observed among local gentry clans of the 18th century. The form of Yeon Sijo shown in Jikam's Gihaeng Sijo is also mainly adopted as a norm for Sijo by the local scholars of the 18th century, who followed Toegye's Dosan Sibyigok (陶山十二曲). It is noteworthy that the experience of traveling, which had been created mainly in the form of Gasa (歌辭), began to be expressed in the form of Sijo. In addition, 『Jikam Yeongeon』 will become a valuable resource for reexamining the literary activities of local gentry clans and the development of Sijo during the period from the 18th century to the early 19th century.

19세기 전후로 충남 아산에서 활동했던 직암(直菴) 조태환(趙台煥, 1772~ 1836)의 저작 『직암영언(直菴永言)』이 최근 발굴·보고되었다. 『직암영언』은 1826년 편집된 것으로, 가사 2편과 시조 210수가 수록되어 있는데, 기존에는 알려지지 않은 새로운 작품들이다. 210수 가운데 직암의 작품은 188수이고, 나머지는 직암의 문인인 정덕유(鄭德裕, 1795~1829)와 이석빈(李碩彬, 1795~1832)의 화답시조가 각각 12수, 10수로 구성되어있다. 직암의 시조 188수는 도학시조, 교훈시조, 은일시조, 기행시조 등으로 구분되는데, 이 중 명승을 유람하며 그 노정과 견문‧감회 등을 담은 기행시조가 89수로 전체 시조 작품 중 가장 많은 수를 차지한다. 유람지는 경기‧호서 지역에 집중되어 있으며, 경유한 명승지를 소재로 삼아 단형시조 2~3수를 연이어서 구성하는 단편적인 연시조의 형태를 띤다. 내용은 주로 승경지의 풍광 묘사와 더불어 흥취를 드러내지만, 유람지에 따른 의식세계는 차이를 보인다. 서원 일대 유람에서는 선현에 대한 숭모와 더불어 유교 이념에 대한 단상이 나타나지만, 역사적 유적지에서는 옛 왕조에 대한 회고와 더불어 역사적 사건에 대한 주관적 소회를 드러내며, 조상의 유적지에서는 선조에 대한 추모의 정을 토로하였다. 『직암영언』은 19세기 개인 시조집 『삼죽사류(三竹詞流)』, 『풍아(風雅)』보다 앞선 시기의 새로운 개인 시조집 발굴이라는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다. 또한 18세기 향촌사족의 문집에서 엿보이던 ‘가사+시조’ 문헌구성 방식과 연시조 형태를 이어가되, 내용면에서는 유가 이념이나 강호한정의 노래에 그치지 않고 주로 가사(歌辭) 형태로 창작되던 기행체험을 시조 형식으로 담아내기 시작했다는 점에서 주목된다. 이에 『직암영언』은 18세기에서 19세기 초에 이르는 시기 향촌사족의 문학 활동과 시조의 전개 양상을 재조명하는데 귀한 자료가 될 것이라 판단된다.
