This study analyzes the evolution of Y2K fashion from its early 21st-century origins to its 2020s revival, aiming to understand its transition as a retro trend and to delineate modern Y2K fashion traits. Utilizing a methodology that combines literature review and case study, it contextualizes Y2K fashion within the socio-cultural milieu of the late '90s and early 2000s and investigates 'newtro' fashion. The analysis of street fashion images from 1999-2004 fashion magazines and 2020-2022 Instagram posts allows for a comparative classification of Y2K styles. Findings reveal that while the 2020s Y2K fashion recalls early 2000s styles, it introduces more diverse interpretations with a diminished presence of ethnic looks. Modern Y2K fashion, characterized by increased body exposure and varied silhouettes, incorporates bold accessories, a signature of Y2K aesthetics. The research highlights the shift towards more contemporary colors and daring body exposure, offering insights into the enduring popularity of Y2K fashion and its implications for future retro trends.

본 연구는 21세기 초에 유행했던 Y2K 패션과 2020년대에 재등장한 Y2K 패션을 비교 분석하여, 레트로 패션으로서 Y2K 패션의 변화상을 살펴보고 현대 Y2K 패션의 특성을 도출한다. 연구 방법은 문헌 고찰을 통해 1990년대 말과 2000년대 초의 사회문화적 배경 속 Y2K 패션의 개념을 조망하고, 뉴트로 패션의 범주를 탐색한다. 또한, 1999년부터 2004년 사이에 발간된 패션매거진의 스트리트 패션 사진과 2020년부터 2022년 사이 인스타그램에 게시된 패션 사진을 분석함으로써, 두 시기의 Y2K 패션 유형을 분류하고 그 특징을 비교 한다. 연구 결과, 21세기 초반의 Y2K 패션의 유형은 캐주얼 힙합 룩, 어반 스포츠 룩, 영 어덜트 룩, 에스닉 룩, 미드리프 룩으로 분류되었다. 2020년대의 Y2K 패션은 21세기 초의 과거를 회상하며 이로부터 영감을 받 았지만, 더 포괄적이고 다양한 해석으로 진화했다. 현대 Y2K 패션은 과거의 스타일을 많이 차용하면서도 새로운 사회적 맥락과 현대적 트렌드를 반영하고 있었다. 특히 신체 노출의 증가와 실루엣의 다양화는 더 대담하고 다양한 패션 표현으로 나타났다. 또한, Y2K 미학의 특징인 대담하고 기발한 액세서리의 사용이 2020년대 Y2K 패션 트렌드까지 지속되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 최근의 Y2K 패션은 과거와 유사하게 캐주얼 하고 스포티한 요소가 계속해서 반영되고 있었으나, 점차 현대적인 색상의 사용과 신체 노출의 대담한 접근 방식으로 변화함을 밝힐 수 있었다. 본 연구는 몇 시즌 동안 지속적으로 유행하는 Y2K 패션을 분류하고 특징 을 도출함으로써, 미래의 레트로 패션 트렌드를 예측하는 데 유용한 자료를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
