This study explores the portrayal and significance of the old woman in classical novels. The term “old woman” can encompass both those identified outside any family structure and those exposed to a social position. Family-associated older women often feature prominently in family-centric novels, while those positioned in society are comparatively rare in classical novels with limited scholarly attention devoted to them. Focusing on the novel, “An Old Woman,” this research delves into the portrayal of an older woman without family ties, navigating financial challenges independently. Older women in society engage in diverse occupations, ranging from peddling goods to involvement in illicit activities. The study includes examples from various classical novels, such as Wangkyungryongjeon, or Okrumong who tries to earn a living through peddling baskets, alcohol, and medicine. In Jeolhwagidam an elderly woman is involved in an unlawful encounter between women, and in Poeuigyojip an aged lady is directly involved in the death of a stranger. An old woman in the royal palace pays money and ends Jade's death, and the assassin retained by the aged woman is engaged in receiving money and taking revenge. The character portrayed by this old woman understands that the current condition of her life reflects the circumstances of an old woman who struggles to stay alive. These older female characters are characterized as noisy, articulate, and knowledgeable about the town affairs, and are more proactive than other supporting characters in classical novels. While economic hardship and social alienation are common themes, their narratives also highlight their resourcefulness and adaptability to maintain their living conditions. The main characters of the novels under study are old women. Instead of simply doing errands for the main character, he performs work and makes things happen. He is characterized as being more aggressive than any other facilitator is in the classical novel. It seems to be a negative attribute that they are generally involved in illegal activities. However, the participation of older women in illicit activities is not framed as an ethical concern; instead, their engagement in unlawful behavior highlights the moral complexities and ethical dilemmas they confront. This type of character represents a unique type of persona that cannot be seen in classical novels. In addition, the stereotypical old woman, depicted as a negative figure, needs to be viewed as a structural problem in society and not as a personal dimension.

이 논문은 고전소설에 등장하는 노파의 형상과 의미를 추적하는 데 목적이 있 다. 늙은 여성에 대한 호칭은 가족 내의 것인 할머니와 가족 밖에서의 호칭, 즉 사 회적인 위치를 드러내는 노파로 구분될 수 있다. 이때 할머니와 같이 가족 내의 관 계에서 드러나는 늙은 여성은 주로 가부장권과 관련하여 등장하며, 주로 가문소설 을 통해 그 모습을 드러낸다. 반면 사회 속에서의 존재인 노파는 고전소설에서 그 모습을 찾아보기 어려우며, 그와 관련된 연구도 찾아보기 어려운 형편이다. 노파가 등장하는 소설에서 노파는 가족이 없거나 있어도 별다른 도움이 되지 못해서 스스로 경제적인 어려움을 해결해야 하는 위치에 있다. 그래서 그들은 여 러 가지 일에 종사하는데, 이때 불법적인 일도 마다하지 않는다. <왕경룡전>이나 <옥루몽>에 등장하는 노파는 바구니나 술, 약재 등을 팔아 생계를 이으려고 한다. <절화기담>이나 <포의교집>, <상사동기>에서 노파는 남녀의 불법적인 만남에 개입하고 있으며, <김인향전>의 노파는 재물에 눈이 멀어 인향의 죽음에 직접 개입한다. <왕경룡전>의 한 노파는 돈을 받고 옥단을 위험에 빠뜨리며, <옥루몽>의 자객 노파 역시 재물을 받고 복수를 대신하는 일에 종사하고 있다. 이러한 노파의 형상은 그들이 처한 삶의 조건이 허드렛일은 물론 불법적인 일에 종사해야만 삶을 유지할 수 있는 당대 노파의 처지를 반영하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 이런 노파들은 무슨 일이든 참견하기 좋아하고 말을 잘하며, 마을의 일에 대해 누구보다도 많은 정보를 아는 것으로 묘사된다. 가족이 없거나 있어도 의지할 만 한 처지가 아닌 이들은 경제적인 어려움에 처해 있음은 물론이요, 외로움을 견뎌 야 하는 소외된 존재들이다. 그러한 노파들은 탈성화된 존재로, 누구에게나 쉽게 접근하고 말을 걸 수 있다는 조건을 활용하여 다양한 일에 개입하고 이를 통해 많 은 정보를 수집하고 있으며, 다시 이러한 조건을 자신의 생계를 유지하는 데 활용 한다. 노파는 소설 속에서 주인공의 욕망을 대리하여 적극적으로 사건에 개입한다. 단 지 주인공의 심부름을 하는 것이 아니라 꾀를 내고 그것을 실현하기 위해 움직인 다. 고전소설에 등장하는 여느 조력자들보다 더욱 적극적으로 행동한다는 점에서 특징적이다. 그런데 이들이 개입하는 일들은 대체로 불법적이거나 사람을 해하는 일에 종사한다. 하지만 이들이 불법적인 일에 종사하는 것은 윤리적인 문제가 아 니라 그들이 처한 현실 때문이라는 점에서 선악이라는 윤리적인 구분인 악인보다 는 부정화된 인물 유형으로 규정할 수 있다. 이러한 인물 유형은 고전소설에서는 흔히 볼 수 없는 독특한 유형이라 할 수 있다. 또한 부정화된 인물로 그려지는 노 파의 표상은 개인의 차원이 아닌 당대 사회의 구조적인 문제로 읽을 필요가 있다.
