Evaluation of Physicochemical Properties and Hair Damage of Oxidation-based Darkening Shampoo

This study comprehensively analyzed the physicochemical properties and effects on hair of two types of oxidation-based darkening shampoos, S1 and S2. Through the analysis of the product ingredients, it was confirmed that these shampoos play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing hair color, as well as in cleansing and protecting the scalp. The unique ingredients in each product were found to contribute to additional nutrition, antioxidation, scalp soothing, and activation. The measurement of pH and electrical conductivity revealed important physicochemical properties related to the cleansing power and darkening effect of the products. Particle size analysis using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) showed significant differences in particle size and distribution between S1 and S2, indicating a substantial impact on product performance. Colorimetric analysis revealed that S2 demonstrated a significant darkening effect with a rapid decrease in L* value from the initial use, while S1 showed a more gradual change in color. Morphological analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) indicated that S1 caused more physical damage during the cleansing process, whereas S2 better preserved the hair cuticle. These findings are expected to provide practical information for the development of darkening shampoos targeting gray hair and suggest the importance of further research to enhance the performance and user experience of such products.
