This survey explores the patterns of first-person pronouns in Japan, among individuals that have close relationships. Notably, 12.3% women in their teens and twenties use the first-person pronouns “boku” and 10.5% tend to use “ore.” “Boku” and “ore” are generally recognized as male-only first-person pronouns, but based on these figures, more than one in ten women will use first-person pronouns that are considered “male-only.” This is typically true in informal situations, but 1.8% of women will still use “boku” and “ore” in formal situations as well. Although it is definitely decreasing, it does not seem to be completely absent. Among women in their 30s and 40s, there appears to be almost no examples of women using “boku” or “ore.” As a result, the so-called tendency for women using male-only first-person pronouns appears to be spreading mostly among young female university aged students. Furthermore, when we look at first-person pronouns for men, we find that “boku” and “ore” are used almost equally in front of close friends, but “ore” decreases in front of superiors, and “boku” and “watashi” become more pronounced. When broken down by age group, it can be seen that men in their 30s and older tend to use “Washi” in formal situations. This seems to show that “boku” is a more respected form than “ore,” and thus older people will tend to use “watashi.”
