Why should we interpret the Bible through social scientific interpretation? During the exegesis process, the text can already be fully understood through historical, cultural, and social interpretations, so is another social scientific interpretation necessary? Social scientific interpretation is the process of studying first-century social and cultural systems that make all kinds of interpretation possible. It serves to enrich the process of exegesis by drawing the fundamental big picture that reveals the historical, cultural, and social environment. However, more than simply providing a rich picture of the text, it guides the audience of this era to the situation of the first century and provides the benefit of bridging the historical and cultural gap. In addition, in this essay, I would like to suggest the possibility of expanding social science interpretation into apologetic preaching because it is useful not only for interpreting the biblical text but also as a tool for interpreting the cultural narrative of this era. We plan to expand on that part further in the next paper, but we will study slavery in 1st century Rome, the subject of this paper, and present its possibilities. Through the concept of “slavery of freedom” in this Roman slavery, we will reveal the concept of modern-day slavery within the cultural narrative of the contemporary audience, and demonstrate its potential through results that more effectively reveal the superiority of the gospel.

왜 사회 과학적 해석을 통해 성경을 해석해야 하는가? 주해 과정에서 이미 역사적, 문화적, 사회 적 해석들을 통해 본문을 충분히 이해할 수 있는데, 또 다른 사회 과학적 해석이 필요한가? 라는 질문을 던진다. 사회 과학적 해석은 그 모든 주해가 가능하도록 만드는 1세기 사회체계와 문화체 계를 연구하는 과정이다. 역사적, 문화적, 사회적 환경이 드러나는 그 밑바탕의 근원적인 큰 그림 을 그려가며, 주해의 과정을 더욱더 풍성하게 돕는 역할을 한다. 그러나 단순히 본문을 풍성하게 그려주는 것 이상으로 이 시대 청중을 1세기 당시의 상황으로 안내하며, 시대적 간격과 문화적 간격을 이어주는 유익을 제공한다. 또한, 이번 소논문에서는 사회 과학적 해석이 성경 본문만을 해석하는 것이 아니라 이 시대 문화 내러티브를 해석하는 도구로도 유용하기에 변증적 설교로 확 장해 나갈 가능성도 제시하고자 한다. 다음 논문에서 그 부분을 더욱더 확장할 예정이지만, 이번 소논문의 주제인 1세기 로마의 노예제도를 통해 연구하며, 그 가능성을 제시하고 한다. 이번 로 마의 노예제도에서 “자유의 노예”에 대한 개념을 통해 이 시대 청중이 가진 문화 내러티브 안의 현대판 노예의 개념을 드러내며, 복음의 우월성을 더욱 효과적으로 드러내는 성과를 통해 그 가 능성을 보여줄 것이다.
