In this study I will examine the gender equality movement of Donghak and Cheondogyo through the concept of ‘Glocalization.’ In particular, here, we start from the argument that Korean women’s movement emerged from Korean traditions that have been passed down consistently, that is, ‘it is based on the accumulated inherent power of women.’ This change in perspective can largely be seen as a structural change in Korean women’s studies from the macro-discourse of the Western women’s equality movement to the micro-discourse that addresses women’s equality issues in Korea. In other words, it contains the fact that such changes can serve as an opportunity to elucidate the concreteness of micro-discourse that has been overlooked by the abstract nature of macro-discourse. Based on this premise, this paper proceeds as follows. First, I will present the issue of women’s equality presented in Donghak thought by Je-woo Choi and Si-hyung Choi from a theological level (‘Sicheonju’, ‘Sain Yeocheon’, etc.). Second, I will examine the history of women’s activities (the formation and its development of ‘Naesudan’) within the institutionalization of Donghak after Uiam’s death and consider its meaning. Third, viewing the spread of the Cheondogyo women’s movement as a result of the practice of the women’s movement in local area, I will introduce the activities of women’s association members in Yongdam, Gyeongju, focusing on Yoon Choi and Yi-Che Yang, as an example. And I will show that such a case is a good model that provides the possibility of implementing ‘Glocalization’ toward ‘from Yongdam to the world’.

본 연구에서 필자는 동학·천도교의 남녀평등운동을 ‘글로컬리제이션(Glocalization)’ 개념을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 여기서는 한국의 여성운동은 면면히 전승되어 한국 전통에서 생성된, 즉 ‘축적되어온 여성들의 내재적 저력에 근거하고 있다’라는 주장으로부터 출발한다. 이러한 관점의 변이는 크게 보아 서구적 여성평등운동이라는 거시담론에서 한국의 여성평등 문제를 다루는 미시담론의 형태로의 한국 여성 연구에 대한 구조변화로 볼 수 있다. 즉 그런 변화는 거시담론의 추상적 성격이 간과한 미시담론 속의 구체성을 해명하는 계기가 될 수 있다는 사실을 담고 있다. 이러한 전제를 바탕으로 본 논문은 다음과 같이 진행된다. 첫째, 동학사상 안에서 제시된 여성평등의 문제를 수운과 해월 사상의 이념 차원(‘시천주’, ‘사인여천’ 등)에서 제시해 보기로 한다. 둘째, 의암 사후 동학의 제도화 안에서의 여성 활동(‘내수단’의 결성 및 전개 과정)의 역사를 살펴보고, 그 의미를 고찰한다. 셋째, 천도교 여성 운동의 확산을 로컬 안에서의 여성운동 실천의 결과로 보면서 필자는 그러한 사례로서 최윤과 양이제 등을 중심으로 경주 용담교구의 여성회 회원들 활동을 소개한다. 더불어 그러한 사례가 ‘용담에서 세계로’ 향한 ‘글로컬리제이션(Glocalization)’ 구현의 가능성을 마련한 하나의 모델임을 밝힌다.
