The purpose of this study is to understand what inmates experience while living in correctional institution, and what meaning the experience is formed. To this end, a study was conducted to understand individual experiences using the narrative inquiry procedure, a qualitative research method of Clandinin & Connelly (2000). Three participants who could provide vivid and sufficient data on their experiences related to the research topic were selected, and data were collected through in-depth interviews over about five months. This study utilized the research procedure proposed by Clandinin & Connelly, but in particular, the data collection and analysis process was conducted with the three-dimensional narrative inquiry space of temporality, sociality, and place in mind. In the results of the study, the story of inmates' life in correctional institution was reconstructed into three stages: "Growth Background", "Inmate Life", and "Meaning of Inmate Life Experience". The meaning of the inmates' experience of life revealed through their stories were "The Cliffs of Life", "Wings on the Precipice", "Family, Hate Once Again", "Time of Repentance, Reflection on Victim", and "Pursuit of a Good Life After Correctional Institution". It is hoped that the results of this study will be used as basic data to understand the lives of inmates living in correctional institution in more detail and provide more appropriate interventions and assistance.

본 연구의 목적은 교도소 수형자가 수용생활을 하면서 어떤 경험을 하며, 그 경험이 어떠한 의미로 형성되는지를 이해하는 것이다. 이를 위해 Clandinin & Connelly(2000)의 질적연구방 법인 내러티브 탐구 절차를 활용하여 개인의 경험을 이해하는 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 주제와 관련해 자신들의 경험 자료를 생생하고 풍부하게 제공해 줄 수 있는 3명의 참여자를 선정하였 고 약 5개월에 걸친 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 본 연구는 Clandinin & Connelly가 제안한 연구절차를 활용 하되, 특히 시간성, 사회성, 장소의 3차원적 내러티브 탐구 공간 을 염두에 두고 자료 수집과 분석 과정을 진행했다. 연구결과에 서 교도소 수형자의 수용생활에 관한 이야기는 <성장배경>, <수 용생활>, <수용생활 경험의 의미>의 세 단계로 재구성되었다. 이들의 이야기를 통해 드러난 교도소 수형자의 수용생활 경험의 의미는 <삶의 벼랑 끝>, <낭떠러지에서의 날개짓>, <가족, 미워 도 다시 한 번>, <참회의 시간, 피해자에 대한 반성>, <출소 후 선(善)한 삶의 추구>이었다. 이 연구 결과가 교도소에서 생활하 는 수형자의 삶을 보다 세밀하게 이해하고 보다 적합한 개입과 도움을 제공하는 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.
