This passage primarily aims to identify the direct relevance of totalitarianism, imperialism, fascism, and Nazism, which emerged in early 20th-century Europe, with the ‘political myth’ phenomenon. In this process, we intend to analyze the emergence, development, and distortion of political myths clearly from the perspective of Cassirer’s cultural politics. Modern totalitarian states that emerged in Europe were able to control and conquer the consciousness and way of life of the people through the mediation of ‘political myths.’ Cassirer pointed to representative examples of political myths that these states had mobilized or utilized, such as ‘hero-worship,’ ‘racial inequality theory,’ the ideology of ‘nation,’ ‘fatalistic view of history,’ and ‘existential philosophy.’ In this context, the focus is on discussing Gobineau’s theory of racial inequality among the five political myths mentioned by Cassirer. First, we will provide a summary and explanation of the publication of Gobineau’s theory of racial inequality highlighting the core content of racial theory. This includes a summary of its perspectives on the decline of civilization and society, theories of civilization, the relationship between race and civilization, social hierarchy based on race, and the global historical significance of Western civilization. Additionally, we will examine how Gobineau’s theory of racial inequality intersects with Nazism and explore the process of its adaptation. From Cassirer’s cultural politics perspective, we will present an interpretation of Gobineau’s theory of racial inequality and its core elements. Finally, the discussion will conclude by exploring how we can understand the relationship between myth and politics. We will examine various forms of remaining racial prejudices within us and discuss their implications.
