[Purpose] This study was conducted to re-examine the contribution he has made to the development of Korean wrestling as a national team player and leader through the life of Bang Dae-Du, a living legend of Korean wrestling Greco-Roman style. [Method] Various newspaper data related to Bang Dae-Du were analyzed, and details of major events were analyzed and described using oral historical research methods through interviews with Bang Dae-Du. [Result & Conclusion] First, Bang Dae-Du started exercising as a ssireum player in middle school and went to Yeongshin High School, a prestigious ssireum in Daegu, and later began wrestling when he was scouted as a wrestler at Hanyoung High School in Seoul. Second, Bang Dae-Du won medals at the Universiade, various world championships, Asian Games, and Olympics, and through this national team career, he was a true champion who had been constantly training himself. Third, Bang Dae-Du, who became a leader, developed various technologies while studying the Greco-Roman wrestling technology system, and showed the typical research leader who helped develop players such as Sim Kwon-Ho, Son Sang-Pil, and Kim Hyun-Woo to the world level by making efforts to cultivate players.

[목적] 본 연구는 한국 레슬링 그레코로만형의 살아있는 전설인 방대두의 생애사를 통해 그가 국가대표 선수로서, 그 리고 지도자로서 한국 레슬링의 발전에 기여해 온 바를 재조명하기 위해 진행되었다. [방법] 방대두와 관련된 각종 신문자료를 분석하였으며, 주요 사건에 대한 구체적인 내용은 방대두와의 인터뷰를 통해 구술사적 연구방법을 활용하 여 분석 및 기술하였다. [결과 및 결론] 첫째, 방대두는 중학교 시절 씨름선수로 운동을 시작하여 대구의 씨름 명문 영신고등학교에 진학하였고, 이후 서울의 한영고등학교에 레슬링 선수로 스카우트 되면서 레슬링을 시작하였다. 둘째, 방대두는 유니버시아드대회, 각종 세계선수권대회, 아시안 게임, 올림픽에서 모두 메달을 차지하였고 이러한 국가대 표 경력을 통해 그가 끊임없이 자신을 담금질해 온 진정한 챔피언이었다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 지도자가 된 방대두는 그레코로만형 레슬링 기술체계를 연구하면서 각종 기술을 개발하였고, 선수 양성에 노력을 기울여 심권 호, 손상필, 김현우 같은 선수들을 세계적인 수준으로 성장시키는데 일조한 연구하는 지도자의 전형을 보여주었다.
