This study is a philosophical study of the human duality of the protagonist of the musical , focusing on Plato’s concept of the soul. The musical shows the duplicity and ambivalence of humans where two minds coexist in one body through the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Edward Hyde. Therefore, this study aims to see Plato’s rational human figure who can relieve harmful emotions, educate, and be equipped with greatness by understanding the structural characteristics of Jekyll and Hyde’s souls with human duality. The following conclusions were drawn. First, Dr. Jekyll, who has not changed to Hyde, also shows violence and cannot hold back his anger, which is the image of the ego with desire in Plato’s soul trichotomy. Dr. Jekyll, who pursues a moral self, also cannot stand human instinctive desires and coexists in constant confrontation. Second, Dr. Jekyll, as a being who is always in conflict between reason and desire, has an open-minded ego of will that Plato says strives to be free from the pain of instinctive desire. Third, because the rational part of the soul controls the body, Jekyll commits suicide to kill Hyde’s animal beast. In the end, through Jekyll’s sacrifice, it is clearly shown that human beings long for a rational soul. Based on Plato’s concept of the soul, the musical suggests that a virtuous cycle of ethics and morality can be formed and social stability and harmony can be maintained.

이 연구는 플라톤의 영혼 개념을 중심으로, 뮤지컬 <지킬 앤 하이드> 주인공의 인 간 영혼의 삼분법에 관해 철학적으로 고찰을 한 논문이다. 뮤지컬 <지킬 앤 하이드> 의 주인공은 하나의 육체 안에 두 개의 정신이 공존하는 이중성과 양면성을 보여주고 있다. 인간은 욕망들로부터 벗어나기 위해서 의지의 기개적인 영혼이 존재하며, 인간 은 유해한 감정을 해소하고 교육하며 훌륭함을 갖출 수 있는 이성적(reason)인간의 모 습을 지녔다는 점을 밝히는 데에 목적이 있다. 따라서 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 하이 드로 변하지 않은 지킬박사 역시 폭력성을 드러내고 분노를 참지 못하는데, 이는 플라 톤의 영혼 삼분법에서 욕망을 지닌 자아의 모습이다. 도덕적 자아를 추구하는 지킬박 사 역시 인간의 본능적 욕구를 참지 못하고 끊임없이 대립하며 공존한다. 둘째, 지킬 박사는 이성과 욕망 사이에서 늘 갈등하는 존재로서 본능적 욕구의 고통으로부터 자유 로워지기 위해 노력하는 플라톤이 말하는 의지의 기개적 자아를 가지고 있다. 셋째, 영 혼의 이성적 부분은 신체를 지배하기 때문에 지킬은 하이드의 동물적 야수성을 죽이기 위해서 스스로 자살한다. 결국 지킬의 희생을 통해서 인간은 이성적 영혼을 갈망하는 존재라는 점을 여실히 보여주고 있다. 뮤지컬 <지킬 앤 하이드>는 플라톤의 영혼 개 념에 기초하여 윤리 도덕의 선순환을 형성하고 사회의 안정과 조화를 유지할 수 있게 한다는 점을 시사하고 있다.
