The purpose of this study is to present an operating example of a balanced liberal arts curriculum established for the cultivation of communication competency based on debate activities and to derive educational implications. This is a 2-credit subject opened in the balanced liberal arts area of G University’s liberal arts curriculum, and has been developed and operated after being selected for the liberal arts course contest proposed by students. This course consists of related theoretical lectures, presentations, debate, discussion activities, and is a class that emphasizes and requires that participation of both debaters and audiences every week. The class was operated in two classes during the first semester of the 2023, and due to the different number of students, the number of team debates was applied differently for each class. In this lecture, debate theories and techniques, attitudes, and principles and practices of round table and team debates were introduced. In addition, to ensure understanding and participation of all students, a debate was held after a lecture on each week’s debate topic. Over the course of one semester, students escaped their fear of public speaking and accumulated practice and experience in clearly communicating their thoughts and opinions without being concerned about others’ evaluations. Students reported that they experienced changes in the quantity and quality of speech, thinking, skills, attitudes, and confidence as time passed through weekly reflections and final essays. Through this study, we will be able to confirm that critical and comprehensive thinking can be cultivated through public expression and constructive discussion with others in an era where convergent experiences and communication are important, and that this can be applied to various classes.

본 연구는 토론 활동을 기반으로 의사소통역량의 함양을 위해 개설된 균형교양 영역 교과의 운영 사례를 제시하고 교육적 함의를 도출하는 데 그 목적이 있다. ‘인시스턴스 의 기술’은 G대학교의 교양교육과정의 균형교양 영역에 개설되어 있는 2학점 교과로서 학생들이 제안하는 ‘내가 디자인한 교양 교과목’ 공모에 선정되어 개발, 운영되어 온 바 있다. 이 교과는 관련 이론 강의와 발표, 토론, 토의 활동 등으로 구성되어 있고 매주 토 론자와 청중 모두의 참여를 강조하고 요구하는 수업이다. 수업의 운영은 2023학년도 1 학기 동안 2개 분반에서 이루어졌고 수강 인원수가 달라서 팀 토론 횟수 등이 분반별로 조금 다르게 적용되었다. 본 강의에서는 토론의 이론 및 기법, 태도, 원탁 및 팀 토론의 원칙과 실제 등을 안내하였다. 또한 전체 학생들의 이해와 참여를 위해 주차별 토론 논 제에 대해 강의를 한 후에 토론을 하는 방식으로 진행하였다. 한 학기 동안 학생들은 공적 말하기에 대한 두려움에서 벗어나 타인의 평가에 연연하지 않고 자신의 생각이나 의견을 명확하게 소통하는 데 있어 충분한 연습과 경험을 축적하는 기회를 가졌다. 학 생들은 주차별 감상문과 기말 에세이 등을 통해 시간이 거듭될수록 발언의 양과 질, 사 고력, 기술, 태도, 자신감 등에서 변화를 체감하였음을 보고하였다. 본 연구를 통해 융 복합적인 경험과 소통이 중요한 시대에 공적으로 자신을 표현하고 타인과의 건설적인 토론을 통해 비판적, 종합적 사고를 함양할 수 있음을 확인하고 이를 다양한 수업에 적 용할 수 있을 것이다.
