This paper is an attempt to explore the identity of pastoral care and counseling by examining the ministry of Jesus Christ as portrayed in the Gospel of John from the perspectives of grace and truth. The Gospel of John summarizes Jesus' identity as grace and truth (John 1:14), which can metaphorically represent the identity of a pastoral counselor. This paper encompasses theological understandings of grace and truth, along with pastoral analysis, using stories of individuals whom Jesus encountered and conversed within the Gospel of John. These stories are analyzed from a pastoral theological perspective within the framework of grace and truth. Grace basically signifies God's love and mercy towards humanity, but it can also be seen through human acts such as kindness, benevolence, and goodwill directed towards others. This perspective on grace is essential for creating therapeutic relationships with clients in counseling settings, reflecting God's love and compassion. On the other hand, truth refers to God's faithfulness in keeping covenants; it manifests through consistency, sincerity, and faithfulness. In counseling settings, this may be expressed through honesty, integrity, and genuineness, including speaking truth in love and using confrontations guided by the Holy Spirit. This paper connects perspectives on grace and truth to major theories in counseling and psychotherapy to demonstrate how these perspectives operate within actual contexts of pastoral care and counseling. It suggests that if pastoral counselors approach their work with perspectives grounded in grace and truth—similar to what Jesus demonstrated—they can engage in highly effective and ideal forms of pastoral care and counseling.
