Discussions of the representation of people with disabilities in many contemporary media, including movies, have been expanding due to the emergence and discussion of related works in Korea and abroad. Previous studies have shown that media perceptions and images of people with disabilities have evolved to represent diverse individuals and that social storytelling and perceptions have changed accordingly. However, the stereotypical images of people with disabilities shown in media still have various problems and do not contribute to the social perception of people with disabilities. In this study, we categorize these negative trends, examine their limitations, and explore the possibility of alternative narratives. We analyze the narrative of the film 'Then Barbara Met Alan' produced and broadcast by the BBC in 2022, which focused focusing on Levinas' consideration of ‘the Other’ and explore the possibility of an alternative to the problems typified in this research. It is expected that media, including film, can bring about positive changes in the perceptions and attitudes of society at large by providing realistic alternative images and by presenting narratives of people with disabilities as both a reflection and an influence on society.

영화를 비롯한 현대의 많은 미디어에서 장애인 이미지의 표현과 그 변화에 대한 논의는 국내외 관련 작품들의 등장과 그에 대한 논의에 힘입어 확대되어왔다. 선행연구를 통해 장애인에 대한 미디어의 인식과 이미지가 다양한 개인의 모습으로 발전 하고 있으며, 그에 따라 사회적 스토리텔링과 인식의 변화도 함께 이루어졌다는 점을 알 수 있다. 그러나 아직까지도 장애인 에 대한 미디어의 정형화된 이미지는 여러 가지 문제점들을 낳고 있어 장애인에 대한 사회적 인식에 기여하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 부정적인 경향들을 유형별로 정리하고 그 한계점을 고찰한 뒤 이에 대한 대안적인 서사의 가능성을 모 색해보도록 한다. 이를 위해 레비나스의 타자성에 대한 고찰을 중심으로, 2022년 BBC에 의해 제작되고 방영된 영화 <그렇게 바버라는 앨런을 만났다>의 서사를 분석하고 본 논문에서 유형화한 문제점들에 대한 대안으로서의 가능성을 모색한다. 영화 를 포함한 미디어가 사회의 반영인 동시에 영향력을 주는 존재로서 장애인에 대한 현실적인 대안적 이미지와 서사를 제공함 으로써 사회 전반의 인식과 태도에 긍정적인 변화를 가져올 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
