Michael Moore has been producing provocative works for over three decades since the release of Roger & Me(1989), which have consistently stirred controversy among both the general public and critics. Nonetheless, the enduring commercial success of Moore's films attests to the presence of persuasive elements inherent in his works. The messages conveyed in his films critique the capitalist system and the upper echelons of power in the United States, themes shared by many other documentaries. Therefore, the distinctive characteristic of Moore's films can be identified in the mode used to convey these themes. The primary focus of this study is the 'Paradoxical Project,' a recurring element in all of Moore's films. This format involves intentionally engaging in conversations or negotiations with low feasibility, resulting in a paradoxical meaning in the outcomes. Characterized by satire and subversive laughter, this unique format presents intensively the film's theme. It also brings to various issues inherent in documentary filmmaking, such as the discourse of sobriety, ethical concerns in production, and the subjectivity of the producer's perspective. Consequently, this study examines the modes and significance of the Paradox Project found in Moore's documentary filmography, offering an exploration of a director's cinematic world while investigating the associated documentary discourse.

마이클 무어는 1989년 <로저와 나> 이후 30여 년 동안 도발적인 작품을 만들어 왔으며 그의 작품은 대중과 평단 모두에서 논란의 중심에 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 무어의 영화가 오랜 기간 대중적 흥행을 거두어 온 것은 그의 작품에 어떠한 설득 의 기제가 내재되어 있다는 것을 방증한다. 그의 영화들이 제시하는 메시지는 미국의 자본주의 체제와 최상위 권력구조 비판 으로 집약되며 이는 다른 많은 다큐멘터리들이 공유하고 있는 주제 의식이다. 따라서 무어 영화의 차별점은 그 주제 의식을 전달하는 형식에 있다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 이 연구가 주목하는 핵심적 형식은 무어의 전작에 걸쳐 등장하는 '역설 프로젝트' 이다. 이는 의도적으로 실현 가능성이 낮은 대화나 협상을 시도함으로써 그 결과의 의미를 역설적으로 형성한다. 이를 통해 무어는 자신을 캐릭터화하고 상황을 설정하여 영화 전체의 주제를 압축적으로 제시할 수 있는 새로운 현실을 창출해 낸다. 풍자와 해학의 저항적 웃음으로 구성된 이 형식은 근엄성의 담론, 제작 윤리의 문제, 제작자 전경화로 인한 주관성의 문제 등 다큐멘터리에 내포된 다양한 쟁점을 끌어낸다. 따라서 이 연구는 무어 다큐멘터리 영화 전작에서 구성된 역설 프로젝트의 양 상과 의미를 살펴봄으로써 한 감독의 작품 세계를 고찰하고 아울러 이에 수반되는 다큐멘터리 담론을 함께 탐구한다.
