The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of storytelling in Makoto Shinkai's films. The background of this research is in the necessity to derive the storytelling methods of the director, who has a filmography consisting of nine films, and to verify whether there are any changes in the storytelling methods used during the process of producing those films. To this end, this study intensively analyzed two typical principles of storytelling, ‘inciting incident’ and ‘dramatic circumstances’, which are creation theories of Robert McKee and David Howard as well. In detail, this study went through the protagonist character setting for each film, the characteristics of the beginning and inciting incident, and the goal of the protagonists to review the characteristics of the dramatic circumstances, as well as the antagonist (obstacles) against the goal, with all subject to an analysis in this study. In general films, there is one protagonist who mainly leads the story, but there appear two protagonists in certain cases in Makoto Shinkai’s films. Out of his films in which two protagonists appear, many have changes in the point of view between the protagonists. He mostly wrote film scenarios and novels with the same storytelling method, and his way of writing appears to have affected these films. On the other hand, there are many works in which the inciting incident that occurs in the film has an unclear beginning and/or boundary, or these inciting incidents themselves are difficult to specify and have the characteristic of occurring later than in the storytelling of general films. In addition, as a result of analyzing the dramatic circumstances in his films, it was found, in many films, that some protagonists have unclear goals. Alternatively, the existence of antagonists (obstacles) is also unclear due to unclear goals, the goals of the protagonists are not derived from the inciting incident, or the protagonists are not very eager to pursue the goals. However, a noteworthy fact that was found in the analysis of the storytelling of Makoto Shinkai's works: the characteristics of the storytelling in his films, as discussed above, are not well revealed in his recent works, as demonstrated in the results of this study. Hence, as he went through his works, his storytelling method changed, becoming closer to that of general films.

이 연구는 신카이 마코토 영화가 가진 스토리텔링의 특징을 분석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 그리고 이번 연구의 진행에는 9편의 필모그래피를 가진 감독의 스토리텔링 방식을 정리할 필요성, 감독이 작품을 제작해 오는 과정에서 스토리텔링 방식에 대한 변화가 있는지를 확인하기 위함 등이 배경에 있다. 이를 위해 로버트 맥키, 데이비드 하워드의 창작론이면서 스토리텔링이 작동 하는 대표적인 두 개의 원리인 ‘도발적 사건’과 ‘드라마틱한 상황’에 대한 연구를 중점적으로 진행했다. 세부적으로는 작품별 주인공 설정, 발단과 도발적 사건의 특징, 드라마틱한 상황의 특징 검토를 위한 주인공의 목표, 목표에 대한 적대자(장애물) 등을 모두 정리하여 분석의 대상으로 삼았다. 먼저 일반적인 영화의 주인공은 이야기를 이끌어 가는 1명의 주인공이 주를 이루지 만, 신카이 마코토 영화에서는 2명의 주인공이 등장하는 사례가 더 많았다. 그리고 2명의 주인공이 등장하는 영화 중에 주인공들 사이의 시점 변화가 있는 작품도 다수 있었는데 감독이 같은 스토리텔링으로 영화와 소설을 함께 집필하는 방식이 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다. 한편, 신카이 마코토의 영화에서 발생하는 도발적 사건은 발단과 경계가 불분명하거나 도발적 사건 자체를 특정 하기 어려운 작품이 다수 존재했으며 일반적인 영화의 스토리텔링보다 그 사건 자체가 늦게 일어나는 특징이 있었다. 또한, 그의 영화에 나타나는 드라마틱한 상황을 분석한 결과 역시 많은 작품에서 일부 주인공은 그 목표가 불분명하거나, 목표의 불분명으로 적대자(장애물)의 존재 역시 불투명하거나, 주인공의 목표가 도발적 사건에서 파생되지 않거나, 주인공이 목표 추구 자체에 적극적이지 않은 사례들이 있었다. 그런데 감독의 작품에 대한 스토리텔링을 분석하면서 확인된 주목할 만한 사실은 앞서 살펴본 신카이 마코토 영화 스토리텔링의 특징들이 연구의 결과와 같이 최근의 작품에서는 잘 드러나지 않는다는 것이다. 이는 감독의 이야기 방식이 작품을 거듭할수록 일반적인 영화 스토리텔링 방식에 가깝게 변화하고 있다는 것을 의미한다.
