This empirical research aims to investigate the psychological impact of suspenseful experiences on film viewers. Suspense is an emotional and cognitive response characterized as an anxious state of mind. Although it can be influenced by various factors, this study specifically focuses on the outcome uncertainty and the information disparity between the protagonist and the viewer. Despite suspense being a complex and continuous response that is challenging to observe, previous research has primarily measured it through self-report questionnaires. This study attempts to observe and analyze the psychophysiological responses of suspense film viewers by measuring their skin conductance level (SCL) and heart rate (HR), in addition to collecting self-report data as a complementary method. It was hypothesized that the outcome uncertainty and the information disparity in a given situation contribute to the degree of suspense. To test this hypothesis, two suspenseful films were manipulated, and psychophysiological and self-report data were collected from viewers (N=40) and analyzed. The psychophysiological data analysis reveals that SCL, associated with emotional arousal, exhibited intriguing trends, whereas the hypotheses were not supported by the psychophysiological data and the self-report items. These findings suggest a connection between SCL and the level of suspense experienced by viewers. The paper concludes by addressing the study’s limitations and discussing the significance of a psychophysiological approach.

이 연구는 서스펜스 영화 감상자의 심리적 반응에 대해 분석했다. 서스펜스는 내러티브를 경험하면서 감상자가 느끼는 불안 감과 긴박감을 말한다. 서스펜스를 유발하는 여러 요소 중에서도 본 연구는 결말의 불확실성과 주인공과 감상자 간 정보의 불일치를 중점적으로 탐구했다. 기존의 많은 연구들에서는 주로 설문지를 통한 자기보고 방식으로 서스펜스 경험을 관찰했으 나, 여기에는 서스펜스가 이용자가 보고하기 어려운 복잡미묘한 반응이며 일정 시간 동안 지속적으로 유지된다는 시간 종속 적 속성을 갖는다는 한계점이 있다. 이에 본 연구는 서스펜스 내러티브 감상자의 심리적 경험에 대해 자기보고 방식과 함께 심리생리적 반응을 보완적으로 활용해 관찰했다. 구체적으로는 결말의 불확실성과 정보의 불일치가 서스펜스 수준을 향상시 킬 것이라는 가정을 수립하고 이를 검증하기 위해 두 개의 서스펜스 영화를 편집 및 조작해 피험자에게 시청시킨 후 데이터 를 수집하고 분석했다. 그 결과 자기보고 및 심리생리적 데이터가 두 개의 가설을 통계적으로 유의미하게 지지하지는 않았으 나, 서스펜스 사건 전개에 따라 감상자의 피부전도수준(SCL) 패턴에 차이가 발생함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 SCL이 감상자 가 느끼는 서스펜스 및 각성도 수준과 상관 관계가 있음을 의미하며, 서스펜스 영화 감상자 연구에서 심리생리적 방법론이 활용될 수 있는 가능성을 시사한다.
