In terms of the relationship between Confucian scholars and monks, this study concerns Wolha Gyeoh who was active around Gajisan Mountain in Ulsan in the early 19th century. Wolha interacted with Confucian scholars in Gyeongju and Gimhae, centering on Ulsan. It is noteworthy that their views on Buddhism vary. Hong Jikpil (洪直弼) and others are critical of Buddhism, with Choi Rim (崔琳) — a Confucian scholar in Gyeongju — having displayed a neutral position. At the same time, it was said that Confucianism and Buddhism would eventually disappear, so Choi Rim's comments show the change in Confucianism. Buddhistꠓfriendly Confucian scholar include Choi Nambok (崔南復) — a Gyeongju Confucian scholar who ran the Baeklyeon Seosa (白蓮書社) — and Lee Hakgyu (李學逵) — who had been exiled to Gimhae. Lee Hakgyu praised Wolha's poem by saying that it seems to contain the end of Zen Buddhism, and asked questions about sudden enlightenment. In the case of Choi Nam-bok and Lee Hak-gyu, they seem to have become interested in Buddhism because Confucianism alone is not adequate in the face of adversity experienced throughout life. This ability to interact with various Confucian scholars reflects the spatiotemporal characteristics of Gyeongsang-do in the 19th century.

조선시대 승려와 유자의 교유 관점에서 19세기 초 울산 가지산을 중심으로 활동한 월하계오(月荷戒悟)의 교유 양상을 고찰하였다. 월하는 울산을 중심으로 경주와 김해 등 인근지역의 유자들과 시문을 매개로 교유하였는데, 이렇게 유자들과 교유한 행적에 대해 유학에 경도되었다고 평가하기도 했다. 그러나 월하는 유교와 불교가 다르지 않다는 유불회통의 입장이었던 것이고, 불자의 입장을 부정하는 이에 대해서는 강하게 반박하였다. 월하가 교유한 유자들의 불교에 대한 견해는 다양하다. 홍직필(洪直弼)을 비롯하여 불교에 비판적인 보수적 경향의 유자들이 있는가 하면, 경주의 유학자 최림(崔琳)은 중립적인 입장을 보여주었다. 나아가 불교에 친화적인 유자들도 있으니, 백련서사(白蓮書社)를 운영한 경주 유학자 최남복(崔南復)과 김해에서 유배 생활을 오래 한 이학규(李學逵)가 해당된다. 이학규는 월하의 시가 선종의 종지를 담은 듯하다며 칭찬했고 ‘돈오(頓悟)’에 대해 질문하기도 했다.
