Various eco-friendly materials are being developed to meet global environmental demand. Among them, multi-purpose alternatives such as eco-friendly packaging, building materials, leather, and large sports using mushroom mycelium are under research and development, and mycelium composite materials, a combination of biomass and mycelium, can be physically and chemically treated to control physical properties. In this study, we investigated the use of Trametes orientalis mycelium as a substitute for wood panels and extended polystyrene (EPS) in packaging and insulation. The compressive strength of mushroom materials was higher than EPS (Korean Standard Bead Act No. 3), which is widely used in daily life. In addition, low heat dissipation showed high safety when exposed to fire, and the density of mushroom materials was similar to that of EPS. Mushroom materials are biodegradable materials and are expected to replace materials such as EPS by reducing weight and improving function
