This study aimed to compare the effects of low self-control and poor parenting on adolescents’ affiliation with delinquent peers. The two predictors were selected to represent the perspectives of population heterogeneity and state dependence, respectively. Data of 1,863 adolescents (974 boys, 889 girls) from the 3rd, 5th, and 7th wave of the fourth graders panel of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010(KCYPS 2010) were fitted into negative binomial regression models. Results showed that, as hypothesized, low self-control had strong and consistent effects regardless of age and gender. In contrast, poor parenting had little impact. The only significant effect was found in the 3rd wave data of boys. However, it appeared to be important to note that poor parenting is theoretically a critical factor in forming the level of self-control low and also it functions to precipitate the revelation of low self-control traits outward. Thus, in policy terms, many efforts are required to upgrade parenting skills to manage low self-control, for the synergistic interaction of both factors might lead to the criminogenic path. Future research with children data younger than 8 and a longitudinal design would be able to examine the mediating and moderating processes among poor parenting, low self-control, and delinquent peers leading to delinquency.

본 연구는 청소년이 비행친구와 접촉하는 이유를 파악하기 위해 모집단이질론과 상 황의존론의 대표 변수인 약한 자기통제력과 부정적 양육방식의 영향을 비교분석하였 다. ‘한국아동·청소년패널조사 2010(KCYPS 2010’의 초등학교 4학년 패널자료 가운데 3 차년도(초등학교 6학년 시기), 5차년도(중학교 2학년 시기), 7차년도(고등학교 1학년 시기) 자료를 이용하여 음이항회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 약한 자기통제력은 비행친구 접촉을 증가시키는 가장 강력한 요인으로 드러났고 이러한 정적 영향은 나이 및 성별 과 무관하게 일관되었다. 반면, 부정적 양육방식은 전체적으로 비행친구와의 상관성이 약했고 유의한 정적 영향도 거의 미치지 못했다. 유일하게 드러난 정적 영향은 초등학 교 6학년 시기의 남학생들에게서였다. 이론적으로 약한 자기통제력의 원인은 부정적인 양육방식과 밀접한 연관이 있고 자기통제력의 발현 또한 부모의 양육방식 등 가정에서 의 상호작용에 큰 영향을 받는다. 특히약한 자기통제력이 발현하여비행친구와 결합할 경우 범죄가 지속될 가능성이 커진다. 따라서 비록 본 연구에서는 부정적 양육방식의 영향이 미미했지만, 정책적인 측면에서는 약한 자기통제력의 원인과 결과(발현)를 관 리하는 데 있어 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나일 수 있다. 향후 8세 이전의 아동에 대한 자 료가 확보되고 보다 체계적인 인과모형이 활성화된다면 부정적 양육방식, 약한 자기통 제력, 비행친구가 서로매개나상호작용을 통해 어떻게 비행의 지속과 변화로 이어지는 지 검증할 수 있을 것이다.
