Today, hacktivists have emerged as key agents in various forms of civil disobedience, cyber attacks, cyber terrorism, cyber warfare, and psychological warfare. The expansion of cyberspace, technological advancements, and the democratization of technology have significantly influenced the participation of non-state actors in cyber warfare, attacks, and cognitive campaigns. Consequently, hacktivism has evolved or transformed over the past two decades, resulting in a diverse range of existence, purposes, ideologies, activities, and methods. Therefore, there is a need to reevaluate commonly accepted conceptual frameworks and understandings of hacktivism. Approaching hacktivism solely as a combination of hacking and activism fails to accurately describe the activities or solidarities among contemporary hacktivists with their diverse characteristics and group dynamics. However, conceptual definitions of hacktivism remain challenging, and there is a scarcity of scholarly discussions and research on redefining these concepts. Nonetheless, it is crucial to initiate discussions on the conceptualization and classification of hacktivists and the definition of hacktivism. Considering the high likelihood of non-state actors such as hackers and hacktivists being continuously leveraged as significant forces in future conflicts, this research aims to analyze the characteristics and complexity of contemporary hacktivism based on existing conceptual definitions of various behaviors within cyberspace. The study seeks to conceptually reframe these discussions by examining a wide spectrum of hacktivist types, ranging from voluntary social movement participants on the far left to extremists or warriors on the opposite extreme. The research employs qualitative analysis techniques, including literature analysis. The findings, discussions, contributions, limitations, and suggestions for future research are presented and discussed.

오늘날 핵티비스트는 다양한 시민불복종 활동, 사이버 공격, 사이버 테러리즘, 그리 고 사이버 전쟁과 사이버 심리전의 핵심적 주체로 떠오르고 있다. 핵티비스들은 지난 20 여 년간 진화 또는 변형하고 있으며 현재의 핵티비스트은 그 존재와, 목적, 이념, 활 동, 그리고 활동방식이 매우 산발적이고, 산개되어있고, 유동적이며, 다양하다. 이에 따 라 핵티비즘에 대한 일반적으로 통용되는 전형적 개념이나 이해의 적절성에 대한 재정 립을 요구하게 된다. 기존의 핵티비즘을 해커와 액티비즘의 결합이라는 단순한 인식으 로 접근한다면, 현재 핵티비즘에 참여하는 다양한 특성과 집단의 모습을 한핵티비스트 들의활동이나 연대를 정확히 설명할 수 없기 때문이다. 그러나 핵티비스트나 핵티비즘 에 대한 개념정의는 아직까지 어려운 문제이며 학자들의 개념재정립에 대한 논의나 학 술적 연구도 매우 미진하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 핵티비스트에 대한 개념정립과 분류에 대한논의가시작될필요가있다. 이는핵티비스트의활동과공격양상의 다변화와함께 핵티비스트들이라고 밝히고 활동하는 해커들의 사회ㆍ인구통계학적 특징이나 이들의 목적, 동기 역시매우 다양해진가운데미래전에서는해커와핵티비스트들과 같은비국가행위자들이 전쟁의 주요 전력으로 지속적으로 활용될 가능성이 매우 높게 예상되기 때문이다. 이에 따라 이 연구는 기존의 사이버 공간 내의 다양한 행위들에 대한 개념정 의들을 기반으로 오늘날 핵티비즘의 특성과 복합성을 분석하여 현재 관찰되는 핵티비 즘 행위자들을 개념적으로재정립하고 관련 논의를 수행하려는목적이있다. 가장핵심 적으로 이 연구는 핵티비스트들의 특성을 반영하는 한편의 긴 스펙트럼 왼쪽 편으로는 자발적 사회운동참여자들로 핵티비스트들을 이해한다면 이들의 반대편의 극단에 분포 하는 다양한 유형의 핵티비스트들을 극단주의자 또는 전사계급에 속한 자들로서 포괄 적으로 이해할 수 있다고 가설을 설정하고 이에 대해 논의하였다. 연구를 위해 문헌분 석을 통한 질적분석기법이 수행되었다. 연구의 결과, 논의, 그리고 연구의 공헌점과 제 한점, 후속연구에 대한 제안들이 논의되고 제안되었다.
