Despite the opposition of his contemporaries, Zhu Xi gave Zhou Dunyi great weight in the genealogy of Dao in Song dynasty, placing him as its founder, and he valued the ideological legacy of the Taijitushuo. However, the existence of Zhou Dunyi and Taiji is not mentioned in any of the commentaries of the Four books, Zhu Xi’s life work. Some have argued that the Taiji is merely a part of Zhu Xi's system of thought that has not been fully integrated into the rest of his philosophy, and this issue is directly related to the question of the place and significance of Taiji in Zhu Xi's philosophical system. After demonstrating that neither of the existing explanations for the Problem of Taiji in Zhu Xi’s Four Books is satisfactory, this paper turns to the predicament of Zhou-cheng lineage as an alternative. It is possible that Zhu Xi deliberately concealed the existence of Zhu Dunyi and Taiji in Four books in order to avoid reigniting the controversy of the time. However, when we look at Zhu Xi’s discussion of Four books as a whole, we can see that the ideological resources Zhu Xi gained through appropriating Zhu Dunyi’s concept of Taiji were actually the core foundation of his Four books. For example, the interpretation of Gewu in the Daxue is actually directly related to Taiji. The significance of these considerations is that they provide a basis for understanding the logic of Taiji and Gewu as mutual.

주희는 당대 유학자들의 반발에도 불구하고 송대 도학(道學)의 계보에 주돈이를 시초로 놓을 만큼 큰 비중을 부여했으며, 『태극도설』의 사상 적 유산을 중시했다. 그러나 주희의 필생의 역작이라고 할 수 있는 『사서장구집주』의 주석 어디에서도 주돈이와 태극의 존재는 드러나지 않는 다. 혹자는 이를 근거로 태극 개념은 이기론(理氣論)을 비롯한 주희의 사상 체계에서 완벽히 융합되지 못한 부분에 불과하다고 주장할 정도로, 이 문제는 주희의 철학 체계에서 태극의 위상과 의의에 관한 문제와 직 결되어 있다. 본 논문은 주희의 사서학과 태극의 문제에 관한 기존의 해 명에 모두 만족스럽지 못한 측면이 있음을 밝힌 뒤, 그 대안으로 주정수 수설의 곤경에 주목한다. 주희는 주정수수설에 관한 당대의 논란을 재 점화하지 않기 위해서 『사서장구집주』에서 주돈이와 태극의 존재를 의 도적으로 감추었을 가능성이 있다는 것이다. 그러나 『사서장구집주』에 국한하지 않고 사서에 관한 주희의 논의를 종합적으로 살펴볼 때, 주희 가 주돈이의 태극 개념을 전유하는 과정을 통해 획득한 사상적 자원은 오히려 그의 사서학을 성립시킨 핵심적 토대라는 점을 알 수 있다. 대표 적으로, 『대학장구』에서 개진되는 ‘격물’의 해석은 사실상 태극과 직결 된다. 이와 같은 고찰은 태극과 격물의 논리를 상호 발명하는 것으로 파 악할 수 있는 단초를 제공한다는 의의가 있다.
