This study integrates fashion photography and cultural fantasy theory to analyze Tim Walker’s work, aiming to identify the fantastical elements depicted in his fashion imagery. Following a foundational examination of cultural fantasy theory, developed by Tzvetan Todorov and Rosemary Jackson, this analysis is founded on three key characteristics —fantastical awe, fantastical grotesque, and fantastical imitation—observed in Tim Walker’s work. Centered on literature and case studies, this research encompasses representative fashion images of Tim Walker, spanning from his initial debut in the fashion industry at age 2006 to 2022. This paper distinguishes itself by focusing on the fantasy theory to explore Walker’s worldview in his work, differing from previous studies. Firstly, Tim Walker pays homage to a myriad of artists through imitative staging based on his reverence for preceding creators. Secondly, he actively employs artisanal set construction techniques to realize fantastical spaces, creating a surreal atmosphere within his fashion images. Lastly, he employs distinctive models over ordinary ones to accentuate the fantastical ambiance of the frame more sensually, utilizing prominent body distortions over natural human imagery to convey fantastical images. Walker’s fashion photography blends eccentric characters and objects within his designed fantastical realms, transcending the boundaries of commercial fashion photography and guiding the viewer to escape from their intricate reality by focusing solely on the mysteries and fantasies inherent in art. Through his fashion photography, Tim Walker amalgamates reality and imagination, expanding individuals’ perceptions and experiences. This study underscores the evolution and artistic value of fashion photography and explores the methodologies shaping the fantastical visual experiences in Tim Walker’s work, emphasizing the importance of the high valuation of fashion imagery in the field of art.

본 논문은 패션 사진과 문화적 환상성 이론을 결합하여 팀 워커의 작품을 분석함으로써 그의 패션 이미지 에 나타난 환상성 특징을 파악하고자 했다. 츠베탕 토도르프 및 로즈메리 잭슨 등이 발전시킨 문화적 환상성 이론의 근본적 고찰을 진행 한 후 이를 토대로 팀 워커의 작품을 분석한 결과 팀 워커의 작품에서 보이는 환상적 경이, 환상적 괴이, 환상적 모방의 세 가지 핵심 특징은 분석하는 이론적 기반이다. 문헌연구와 사례 연구를 중심으로 이루어진 본 연구는 분석 대상인 팀 워커의 패션 이미지의 수집 범위는 그가 처음 패션계에 데뷔한 2006년부터 2022년까지의 대표 패션 이미지이다. 워커의 작품을 환상성 이론에 집중하여 그의 세계관 에 대해 연구했다는 점에서 기존 선행연구와 차별점을 가지는 본 논문의 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 팀 워커는 선대 작가들에 대한 경의를 기반으로 한 모방적 장면구사로 다양한 작가들의 작품을 오마주했다. 둘 째, 패션 이미지의 초현실적인 분위기를 형성함에 있어 수공예적인 세트 구성 기술을 적극 활용하여 환상적 공간을 실재적 구현하였다. 마지막으로 평범한 모델보다는 특색 있는 모델을 기용하여 화면의 환상적인 분위 기를 더욱 감각적으로 표현하며 인체 본연의 이미지를 활용하는 것보다 두드러지는 신체 왜곡을 통해 환상 적 이미지를 표현했다. 워커의 패션 사진은 기이한 캐릭터와 사물들을 조화시켜 자신이 설계한 환상의 공간 에서 상업적 패션 사진의 경계를 넘고, 많은 담론과 이슈가 넘쳐나는 세상에서 예술이 가진 신비로움과 환상 에만 집중하여 보는 이로 하여금 복잡한 일상에서 탈피를 주도한다. 팀 워커는 패션 사진을 통해 현실과 상상 을 융합하며 사람들의 인식과 경험을 확장시킨다. 이 연구는 패션 사진의 진화와 예술적 가치를 강조함과 동시에 팀 워커의 작품에 나타나는 환상적인 시각적 경험을 형성하는 방법을 탐구하여 패션 이미지가 예술 분야에서 높이 평가되는 중요성을 강조한다.
