The purpose of this study is to summarize the history of volleyball cheering in Korea in domestic newspaper articles and to clarify its meaning. Consequently, the following conclusions were obtained. First, in the 1950s after liberation, unilateral and unconditional cheer based on regional associations was the main focus. Second, in the 1960s, the unconditional cheering culture of the 1950s appeared as an international competition. Third, in the 1970s, a group of favorite players' fans mobilized placards to start a fan cheering culture. Fourth, in the 1980s, witty phrase cheering using popular song lyrics appeared, and it was a time when skilled gestures and witty slogans appeared by hiring cheering part-timers, which is considered the predecessor of cheerleaders. Fifth, in the 1990s, the company's PR and the team were supported through systematic collective cheer based on be strongly devoted to one’s company, and with the emergence of the older brother unit, various witty phrases appeared. Sixth, in the 2000s, cheerleaders appeared due to professional volleyball, and the spatial scope of cheering expanded to outside the stadium. Finally, in the 2010s, teams and players were cheered without time and space restrictions through online such as SNS, and it expanded to protect and support the players' daily sharing and rights and interests.

이 연구는 국내의 신문기사에 나타난 우리나라의 배구응원 변천사를 정리하고, 그 의미를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 따라서 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 광복 이후 1950년대에는 지역 연고를 기반으로 하는 일방적 응원이 주를 이루었다. 둘째, 1960년대는 1950년대의 일방적 응원문화가 고스란히 국제대회 경기로 나타났다. 셋째, 1970년대는 좋아하는 선수 팬들의 모임이 플래카드를 동원해 응원하는 팬 응원문화의 서두를 열게 되었다. 넷째, 1980년대는 유행가 가사를 본뜬 격문 응원이 나타났으며, 응원 아르바이트생을 고용하여 능숙한 몸짓 및 재치있는 구호가 나타난 시기로 치어리더의 전신으로 판단된다. 다섯째, 1990년대는 애사심을 바탕으로 체계화된 집단응원을 통해 자사 PR과 함께 팀의 승리를 응원하였으며, 오빠 부대의 출현과 함께 재치 격문이 만발하였다. 여섯째, 2000년대는 프로화로 인해 응원 전문가 인, 치어리더가 나타났으며, 응원의 공간적 범위가 경기장 밖으로까지 확장되었다. 마지막으로 2010년대는 SNS 등의 온라인을 통해 시공간 제약 없이 팀과 선수를 응원하였으며, 선수의 일상 공유 및 권익을 보호하고 지지하는 역할로 확장되었다.
