The Spanish Civil War was the first ideological war to be recognized as a struggle between classes, authoritarianism and liberalism, revolution and counter-revolution, communism and fascism, and propaganda was actively used in this war. This characteristic stands out, especially in the field of posters. War is cruelty and fear itself to mankind, and in the Spanish Civil War, these grotesque feelings were appealed through posters. This study classified aesthetic characteristics of the grotesque into the themes of ‘the brutality and disgust of expression,’ ‘the bizarreness of the modified body,’ and ‘the caricature of satire,’ and analyzed the aspects of grotesque expressed in the propaganda posters of Spanish Civil War. In addition, the ideology included in the poster was identified through semantic analysis. As a result of the analysis, the two camps directly appealed to the international community and the Spanish people by caricature, dehumanizing them as beasts or monsters, and causing anxiety with cruel, heterogeneous, or terrifying images. The two camps shared an ideology of solidarity and participation, but the Republicans argued for its legitimacy by emphasizing freedom, equality, and the collapse of authority, and the Nationalists emphasized integration, stability, and maintenance of the existing order. Through research, it was confirmed that the grotesque characteristics of the propaganda poster can be analyzed and interpreted in various ways according to the ideology of the message sender.

스페인 내전은 계급간의 투쟁, 권위주의와 자유주의, 혁명과 반혁명, 공산주의와 파시즘 간의 투쟁으로 인식 되는 최초의 이데올로기 전쟁이었으며 프로파간다는 이 전쟁에서 활발하게 활용되었다. 특히 포스터 분야에서 이러한 특색이 두드러진다. 전쟁은 인류에게 잔인함과 두려움 자체이고 스페인 내전에서는 이러한 그로테스크 의 감정이 포스터를 통해 호소되었다. 본 연구는 그로 테스크의 미학적 특성을 ‘표현의 잔혹성과 혐오성’, ‘변 형된 육체의 엽기성’, ‘희화화된 풍자성’이라는 주제로 분류하고 이를 중심으로 스페인 내전의 프로파간다 포 스터에 표현되어있는 그로테스크의 양상을 분석하였다. 또한 의미분석을 통해 포스터에 함의된 이데올로기를 파악하였다. 분석결과 두 진영은 국제사회와 스페인 국 민들에게 각자의 정당성을 주장하기 위해 프로파간다 포스터의 그로테스크의 표현방식을 통해 상대를 희화하 고 짐승이나 괴물로 비인간화하였으며 잔인하거나 이질 적, 또는 공포스러운 이미지로 불안을 야기하는 방식으 로 인간의 적개심과 동정심, 두려움에 직접적으로 호소 하였다. 두 진영은 공통적으로 연대와 참여의 이데올로 기를 전달하고 있었으나 공화진영은 자유와 평등과 권 위의 붕괴를, 국민진영은 통합과 안정과 기존질서의 유 지를 강조함으로써 자신의 정당성을 주장하였다. 연구 를 통하여 프로파간다 포스터에서 그로테스크적 특성들 은 그 메시지 전달자의 이데올로기에 따라 다양하게 분 석되고 해석될 수 있다는 점을 확인하였다.
