This study focuses on the life stories of KSGI members to examine the characteristics of Korea SGI (hereafter KSGI), which is the most active of the Japanese new religions in South Korea. Interviews were conducted with 20 KSGI members between November 2018 and July 2019. Based on the interviews, this study categorized the process of joining KSGI into five types: (1) healing of family members or one's own illness, (2) family affairs or domestic discord, (3) maternal faith, (4) Hwakwang Newspaper, and (5) marriage. The results showed that the motivation for joining KSGI was characterized by the presence of KSGI members in the family, the presence of religious experience of believers from birth, the large role of women in the joining process, and the natural propagation activities of KSGI members in their daily lives. These characteristics can be said to be one of the factors that have contributed to the strong membership and presence of KSGI, which is still one of the largest religions of Japanese descent today.

이 글에서는 일본 신종교 중 국내에서 가장 왕성한 활동을 보이는 한국SGI(이하 KSGI)의 특징을 고찰하기 위해 KSGI 회원의 라이프 스토리에 주목한다. 인터뷰 조사는 2018년 11월 부터 2019년 7월에 걸쳐 20명을 대상으로 진행되었다. 인터뷰 내용을 기반으로 이들의 입신 과정을 ①가족이나 자신의 병 치유가 원인, ②집안사정이나 가정불화가 계기, ③모태신앙인 경우, ④화광신문이 매개가 된 경우, ⑤결혼이 계기가 된 경우, 5가지 유형별로 소개했다. 그 결과 KSGI 회원 입신 동기는 가족 중 KSGI 회원 유무, 모태 신앙자의 종교적 체험 유무, 입 신 과정의 여성들의 큰 역할 비중, KSGI 회원들의 일상 삶 속 자연스러운 포교 활동과 같은 특징을 나타냈다. 이러한 특징이야말로 오늘날 KSGI가 일본계 종교 중 거대 종교로 여전히 막강한 회원 확보와 존재감을 나타내는 요인 중 하나로 작용했다고 할 수 있으며, KSGI의 특징이라 할 수 있을 것이다.
