The sociocultural influence of shrines in Japan is important. However, the ties between Shinto shrines and local communities have become fragile due to urbanization and aging. In addition, Shinto shrines face difficulties managing, forcing them to redefine their relationship with the public. This paper analyzes how Shinto shrines survive in contemporary Japanese society. On the one hand, Shinto shrines are strengthening their relationship with the local community by engaging residents in the preparation of shrine festivals and by making shrines more familiar in their daily lives. On the other hand, they utilize an inter􋹲regional method aimed at distributing various goshuins or collaborating with pop culture to attract residents from other regions. No longer able to rely solely on the local population, Shinto shrines are striving to survive through an inter􋹲regional strategy that utilizes the cultural context that exists in Japan. Because people's values have changed from the past, it is difficult to expect an increase in visitors if they do not differentiate themselves from the past. Therefore, the importance of an inter􋹲regional method will continue to be emphasized.

일본을 이해할 때 신사의 사회문화적 영향력을 제외하고서는 제대로 된 이해를 할 수 없 을 만큼 신사의 중요성은 크다. 그러나 도시화, 고령화 등으로 인해 신사와 지역사회의 유대 감이 희박해지고 신사 운영에 어려움이 생기면서 대중과의 관계를 재정립하지 않을 수 없게 되었다. 본 연구는 현대 일본 사회에서 신사가 어떤 방식을 통해 대중과의 관계를 증진시키고 있 는지를 분석하였다. 신사는 지역 집중형 방법으로 전통적 축제 준비과정에 주민들의 참여를 유도하거나 주민들이 일상생활 속에서 신사를 친근하게 느끼도록 방법으로 지역주민과의 관 계를 강화하고 있었다. 다른 한편으로 지역 포괄형 방법을 통해 전통적인 방식에서 벗어나 다른 지역 거주자도 끌어들일 수 있도록 다양한 고슈인을 배포하거나 대중문화 콜라보레이션 을 활용하기도 하였다. 더 이상 지역주민에게만 의지할 수 없게 된 신사는 일본에 이미 존재하고 있는 문화적 맥 락을 활용한 지역 포괄형 전략을 통해 생존에 힘쓰고 있다. 현대사회에 이르러서 사람들의 가치관이 과거와 달라진 탓에 과거와 차별점을 두지 않으면 참배객 증가를 기대하기 어려워 졌다. 따라서 지역 포괄형 생존 전략의 중요성은 앞으로도 강조될 것이다.
