This article aims to study not only the main services including obstacles and its solutions the Taiwha Christian Community Center(TCCC) has provided but also the personnel who have participated in the organization which has a history of 100 years. This article also tries to analyze the role of private organizations and the government relating to TCCC. During the past 100 years, TCCC experienced many obstacles sometimes but overcome them eventually. Starting as a Woman’s Center in 1921, TCCC played a key role in Korea as an Evangelistic Center based on Christian evangelism. Working as a Settlement House. in addition, TCCC tried hard to spread the Christian gospel to society by working as Social Center and providing Social Service and Social Welfare. For this reason, TCCC has been recognized as the first settlement house and as a community center in Korea. In 1939, when TCCC was trying to build a new Taiwha Community Center in a Hanok(traditional Korean house) style and proceed with new projects, the Japanese Governor-General of Korea confiscated all of Taihwa's property and shut it down for years. The history of TCCC is unique in the history of Korean Social Welfare. From the beginning of the first settlement house established in Korea to the present, TCCC has endured many difficult periods: the Japanese colonial period, the US military government, the Korean War, and the post-war restoration period. Considering this history, TCCC should be properly recognized as one of the most important social community centers in Korea like Toynbee Hall in England and Hull house in the United States.

본 논문은 100년의 역사를 갖고 있는 태화기독교사회복지관의 발전과정에 참여한 주요 인력과 주요 사 업내용, 장애요인과 극복방안, 민간단체와 정부기관의 역할은 무엇이었는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 시 도되었다. 1921년 태화여자관(Woman’s Center)으로 시작된 태화기독교사회복지관은 복음센터 (Evangelistic Center)로써 기독교 복음전도를 목적으로 출발하였다. 그러나 태화사회관은 사회센터(Social Center), 사회봉사(Social Service), 사회복지(Social Welfare)를 통해 기독교 복음을 사회 속에 확산시키 려 노력하면서 인보관의 역할을 수행해 왔다. 때문에 태화기독교사회복지관은 우리나라 커뮤니티 센터로 서 최초로 시작된 인보관으로 인정되고 있다. 태화기독교사회복지관은 1939년 4년여에 걸쳐 한옥으로 태화사회관을 새롭게 건립하고, 새로운 사업을 추진하려고 하던 중 조선총독부에서는 태화의 모든 재산 을 압류하고 여러 해 동안 폐쇄조치에 들어갔던 잊지 못할 사건도 있었다. 태화기독교사회복지관의 역사 는 어느 한 시설의 역사가 아니다. 태화기독교사회복지관은 우리나라에 최초로 설립된 인보관으로 일제 강점기, 미군정기, 한국전쟁, 전후복구시기 등 설립 당시부터 현재까지 수많은 파란의 역사를 잘 감당 극복해 왔다. 이러한 역사적 의미를 갖고 있는 태화기독교사회복지관은 영국의 토인비 홀, 미국의 헐 하 우스처럼 많은 논문으로 기록되어 알려져야 할 것이다.
