This study examines the intention behind describing the legitimacy of Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s lineage, focusing on the Noh play of Medieval Japan. Minamoto no Yoshitsune was the ninth son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, and was a child of a concubine. He was appointed as a daikan (代官 —an official who acted on behalf of a ruling monarch or a lord) by his elder brother, Minamoto no Yoritomo. In fact, his authority as the general of Genji came from Yoritomo. In the Heike Monogatari, Yoshitsune is described as “the younger brother of Yoritomo.” However, later, attempts were made to enhance the authority of Yoshitsune’s lineage via expressions such as “the Son of Yoshitomo” or “a Hero like Hachimantaro.” The intention was to portray him as the legitimate lineage of Kawachi-Genji (the Minamoto clan) and a hero, independent of Yoritomo’s authority. Additionally, he was glorified based on his connection and similarity to Minamoto no Yoshiie, who was revered as a respected warrior and patron saint of the Bushi class. He was described as qualified to be a Toryo (棟梁 —a leader) of Genji, just like Yoritomo.

미나모토노 요시쓰네(源義経)는 가마쿠라(鎌倉)의 다이칸(代官)으로서 역사의 무대에 등장했으며, 요리토모(頼朝)와의 대립 이후 그 지위를 상실하고 몰락의 길 로 들어섰다. 적자이자 가문의 후계자인 요리토모와는 출신부터 격이 다른 신분이 었으며, 헤이케모노가타리(平家物語)의 성립 시점까지도 그의 기본적 위치는 ‘요 리토모의 아우’에 불과했다. 그러나 시간이 흐름에 따라 그 행적이 전설화되고 민 중의 인기와 동정이 집중되면서, 그의 혈통과 후계로서의 정통성 또한 ‘무가를 대 표하는 겐지(源氏)의 동량’인 요리토모에 버금가는 것으로 미화하고자 하는 시도가 이루어지게 된다. 본고에서는 무로마치 시대(室町時代) 이후 폭발적으로 창작되기 시작한 호간모노(判官物) 중에서도 그 작품성이나 영향력 등에서 노(能)의 호간모노가 차지하는 위치를 염두에 두고, 이를 중심으로 요시쓰네에 대한 당대의 인식을 고찰하는 것 을 목표로 삼았다. 특히 소위 호간비이키(判官びいき)의 풍조가 고조되는 시대적 분위기와 더불어 사실상 가마쿠라 정권의 권위 내에서 그 지위와 역할이 부여되었 던 요시쓰네의 혈통적, 배경적 한계를 윤색하려 했던 의도를 파악하고자 했다.
