This study focuses on the points at which Seongnam City's separate identity changed in response to government-led urban development, and particularly delves into how residents' responses centered on education and assets are used as a strategy to change the existing regional/city identity. While the response strategies of residents of the local city center are emerging in recognition of the educational gap, the increase in real estate values due to the redevelopment of the old local city center brings contradictory results to the identity of a ‘citizen of Seongnam.’ The city is dynamic as if it has become one, as it can rise by relying on the new infrastructure that new towns and redevelopment will bring. However, residents of the original downtown who have difficulty maintaining their homes after redevelopment must choose to move again. Meanwhile, Seongnam City is also referred to as a place where people “live in harmony” due to various social classes, but this can be interpreted as conversely revealing that socially and economically separated identities have been strengthened. The fragmented regional identity of Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, created by two large new town developments and the redevelopment of the original downtown, reveals the paradoxical aspect of urban development.

본 연구는 성남시의 분리된 정체성이 정부 주도 도시개발에 따라 변화하는 지점들, 특히 교육과 자산을 중심으로 한 주민들의 대응이 기존의 지역/도시 정체성을 변화시 키는 전략으로 활용된다는 점에 주목한다. 교육 격차를 인식한 원도심 주민들의 대응 전략이 나타나는 한편, 원도심 재개발로 인한 부동산 가치 상승은 ‘성남시민’이라는 정체성에 상반된 결과를 가져온다. 신도시와 재개발이 가져다줄 새로운 인프라에 기 대어 상승할 수 있는 것에서 도시는 하나가 된 듯 역동한다. 그런데 재개발 이후 집을 유지하기 어려운 원도심 주민은 다시 이주를 선택해야 한다. 한편 다양한 사회적 계층 으로 인해 성남시라는 공간이 “어우러져 사는” 곳으로도 언급되지만, 이는 사회적/경 제적으로 분리된 성남시의 의미와 정체성을 드러내는 ‘방어적인 정체성’으로 해석될 수 있다. 두 번의 큰 신도시 개발과 원도심 재개발 과정이 만들어낸 경기도 성남시의 파편화된 지역정체성은 도시개발의 역설적 면모를 드러내고 있다.
