The social and cultural phenomenon is a semantic multi-layered structure, and there are various differences depending on the social subject to interpretation, so it is necessary to take a pluralistic approach in research purposes and research methods. Accordingly, this study set two research problems: first, “What are the application cases of pluralistic research methods?” and second, “What is the significance of pluralistic research methods in social science?” Eight doctoral dissertations on the SBI course at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, which are subject to analysis, consist of individual papers using various research methods and data collection, set detailed research problems and sub-aim to solve the research problem of the research topic. From the way one research method dominates the entire study, parallel topics and research methods head to the central topic with an organic relationship and reach conclusions inductively. This is an advantageous way to successfully explain the multi-layered meaning by approaching complex and implied social and cultural phenomena from various angles. The pluralistic research method begins with a philosophical approach to how to look into and solve the reality of research problems, not what research methods were used in social science. Through this, social scientists will be able to successfully implement coexistence practices in solving social problems by insight into society without alienating various values, areas, and perspectives, rather than moving three-dimensional society into flat text.

사회문화 현상은 의미론적 중층 구조로, 해석하는 사회적 주체에 따라 차이가 다양 하게 나타나기 때문에 연구목적이나 연구방법에 있어 다원주의적으로 접근할 필요성 이 있다. 이에 본 연구는 첫째, “다원주의적 연구방법의 적용사례는 어떠한가?”, 둘째, “사회과학에서 다원주의적 연구방법의 의의는 무엇인가”라는 두 가지 연구문제를 설정 하였다. 분석 대상인 미국 존스홉킨스 대학교 SBI과정 박사학위 논문 8편은 해당 연구주제의 연구문제를 해결하기 위해 세부 연구문제(study)와 목표(sub-aim)를 설정하고 다양한 연구방법과 자료수집을 활용한 개별 소논문으로 구성되어 있다. 하나의 연구방법이 연 구 전체를 지배하는 방식에서 벗어나 병렬적 주제와 연구방법이 유기적 관계성을 갖고 중심 주제로 향하면서 귀납적으로 결론에 도달한다. 이는 복잡하고 함축적인 사회문화 현상을 다각도로 접근하여 중층적 의미를 성공적으로 설명하기에 유리한 방식이다. 다원주의적 연구방법(pluralistic research method)은 사회과학에서 어떠한 연구방 법을 활용하였느냐가 아닌 어떻게 연구문제의 실체를 들여다보고 해결했느냐의 철학 적 접근에서 출발한다. 이를 통해 사회과학자는 입체적인 사회를 평면적인 텍스트로 옮기는 것이 아니라 다양한 가치, 영역, 관점의 소외 없이 사회를 통찰함으로써 사회문 제 해결에 있어 공존적 실천을 성공적으로 해낼 수 있을 것이다.
