In this article, I examined the description of gisaeng in Kim Yoo-jung (金裕貞, 1908~1937) novels to identify the value and possibility of using his literary works as educational texts for understanding gisaeng in colonial Korea(1910~1945). In the 1930s, when most of Kim Yoo-jung’s novels were published, some gisaeng had lots of opportunities to participate in public events as performing artists, accumulated wealth, and even went on strike to safeguard the interests and rights of themselves. I analyzed Kim Yoo-jung novels set in the 1930s urban areas to find whether they include some parts reflecting such gisaeng’s diverse activities. On analysis, Kim Yoo-jung portrayed and perceived gisaeng as those who attained economic independence and professional skills, and individual human beings. This contrasts with his narratives on other groups of women and other contemporary male authors’ overall descriptions of gisaeng, most of which were about gisaeng’s tough life as prostitutes. The findings imply that, if carefully read, Kim Yoo-jung novels can be used as educational texts revealing dynamic narratives on the colonial-era gisaeng.

이 글은 김유정(金裕貞, 1908~1937) 소설에 나타난 기생 이미지를 다각도에서 분석하여 일제 기생문화 이해하기 텍스트로서의 활용 가치와 가능성을 살펴보고자 하는 시도이다. 김유정 소설이 발간된 1930년대에 기생은 극장 무대와 박람회에 배치되어 공적 영역에서 활동할 기회가 많아지고, 경제적 부를 축적했으며 자신들 의 권익 신장을 위해 파업을 자행하였다. 필자는 김유정 소설에 이러한 기생의 다 채로운 활동사를 반영한 부분이 있는지 고찰하고자 그의 식민지 도시 배경 소설을 분석하였다. 그 결과 김유정 소설에 묘사된 기생을 화류계 여성으로서의 녹록지 않 은 삶을 사는 기생, 경제력을 갖춘 여성으로서의 기생, 전통문화를 지키는 예능인 으로서의 기생, 남녀 간 감정 교류 대상으로서의 기생 등으로 유형화할 수 있었다. 이러하듯 일제강점기 다양한 면모의 기생의 삶을 표상하고 있는 김유정 소설은 그 의 기생 관련 경험과 인식을 반영한 결과로 김유정 소설이 일제 기생문화 이해 텍 스트로 활용될 가능성을 시사한다.
