The interaction between police and citizens has an effect on attitude of police officer upholding the legal law enforcement. Yet, a comprehensive understanding of how public interactions impact law enforcement officers' determination to enforce laws has remained largely unexplored. This study aims to influence of public contact on support for democratic policing of front-line officer. Furthermore, this study seeks to ascertain the mediating role of public service motivation in the relation between public contact and support for democratic policing. This study found the positive impact of public contact on support for democratic policing. Moreover, the research findings confirmed the positive mediating effect of public service motivation on the relation between public contact and support for democratic policing. This study shows that connection between public interactions and the motivation of police officers to uphold public service ideals and democratic law enforcement principles. After execution of municipal police system in south korea, importance of cooperation between citizen and police has increased day by day. Also, raw of Citizen Patrol Corps for Voluntary Crime Prevention has been implemented since this year. At this point, the cooperation of citizen and police will be important day by day. This study suggest the desirable connection between citizen and police. We hope that this study can shed light on the importance of police-citizen interaction.

대민접촉 과정에서 발생하는 경찰과 시민의 상호작용은 경찰과 시민 모두에게 영향을 미치고 그 방향에 따라 경찰의 법집행의지에도 상반된 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 경찰과 시민의 관계에 주목하는 국내 연구에서 경찰을 대상으로 수행된 연구는 많지 않다. 여태까지의 연구들은 시 민을 대상으로 경찰에 대한 신뢰, 경찰접촉 경험에 따른 경찰 활동에의 협력 의사, 경찰의 정당성 등을 묻고 이를 근거로 경찰조직의 개선방안을 제시할 뿐 대민접촉이 경찰의 법집행의지에 미치는 영향은 충분히 규명되지 못했다. 따라서 이 연구는 대민접촉 과정에서 형성되는 사회자본성이 일선 경찰관의 민주적 법집행의지에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 검증하고자 수행되었다. 그리고 그 영향 관계에 있어 내재된 공공봉사동 기가 어떠한 매개효과를 보이는지를 검증하였다. 대민접촉이 경찰의 법집행의 원인으로서 존재하고 이로 인해 특정한 법집행의지가 형성된다면 경찰관이 지니고 있는 공공봉사동기는 경찰관의 내재적 동기로서 대민접촉 사회자본성과 민주적 법집행의지 간의 관계를 정적으로 매개할 수 있을 것이라 가정하였다. 연구결과 종속변수인 민주적 법집행의지에 대한 독립변수인 대민접촉 사회자본성의 정적인 영향 이 확인되었으며, 종속변수인 민주적 법집행의지에 대한 매개변수인 공공봉사동기의 정적인 영향력 도 확인되었다. 마지막으로 종속변수인 민주적 법집행의지와 독립변수인 대민접촉 사회자본성의 관 계에 대한 매개변수 공공봉사동기의 정적인 매개효과가 확인되어 대민접촉 사회자본성과 공공봉사 동기 그리고 민주적 법집행의지가 하나의 구조에서 논의될 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 경찰관의 공공봉사동기와 민주적 법집행의지에 미치는 대민접촉의 영향력을 확인했다 는 점에서 의의가 있다. 자치경찰제가 정착되고 자율방범대의 법적 토대가 마련되는 등 시민과 경찰의 협력이 중요해지는 시점에서 민경협력의 중요성이 다시금 강조되는 데 있어 이 연구가 이바지할 수 있기를 기대한다.
