Popular culture, which reflects many facets of humanity, is also interested in human fears in situations of existential limitation. This is often expressed through films and TV shows categorized as horror genre. This particular genre is regarded as the subject of theological study because it explores religious themes as well as contemporary situations and the understanding of humanity of a society. Among them, there are “occult genre films and TV shows” which deal with supernatural phenomena. These films and TV shows compare rationally incomprehensible social realities to the activities of supernatural beings such as evil spirits and depict human or religious struggles to overcome them. Occult films and TV shows, which has been appeared in the Korean popular culture scene since 2015, deliver narratives that express the social unrest that has risen sharply since the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014 as well as the dissatisfaction of the younger generation with the prolonged economic recession and youth unemployment. What is interesting is the choice of (institutional) religion as a means of resistance to the situation in these works. This is very unusual for popular cultural works produced in Korea, which is not a Christian society. What is the meaning of religion in contemporary Korean occult films and TV shows? What is the reality against which religion is depicted as a means of resistance? What are the social contexts and public expectations of religion led to the emergence of the occult works in which religion has an important role? From the practical theological perspectives, this study analyses and interprets occult films and TV shows produced in Korea since 2015 as texts to see how the images of religion and religious people are changing. Considering that the image of religion reflected in the mass media is by no means independent of Korean society’s gaze, this study examines the social roles of Christianity in Korean society and people’s expectation of Christianity. Finally, this paper suggests what the challenges of Christianity in Korean society are in relation to the public expectations of religion, and what the Korean church should do to fulfill them.

인간의 다양한 면모를 반영하는 대중문화는 실존적 한계 상황에서 드러나는 인간 의 공포에도 관심이 많다. 이는 호러물로 분류되는 영화나 드라마를 통해 주로 드러 나는데, 이들은 종교와 연관된 주제뿐만 아니라, 한 사회의 시대적 상황, 그리고 인간 에 대한 고찰을 담고 있으며, 그런 점에서 신학적 연구의 대상이 될 수 있다. 그중에 서도 초자연적 현상을 다루는 작품을 “오컬트 장르물”이라고 하는데, 이성적으로 납 득할 수 없는 사회적 현실을 악령과 같은 초현실적 존재의 활동에 비유하고, 이를 극 복하기 위한 인간 혹은 종교의 사투를 묘사하는 것이 특징이다. 2015년 이후로 한국 의 대중문화계에 등장한 오컬트 장르의 드라마, 영화 등은 2014년에 일어난 세월호 사건 이후 급격하게 높아진 사회적 불안과 장기간 이어진 경기침체, 청년 실업 등으 로 인해 생겨난 청년세대의 불만을 대중적 서사로 풀어낸 작품들이라 할 수 있다. 흥미로운 것은 이러한 작품들이 악이 주도하는 상황에 대한 저항의 수단으로 (제도) 종 교를 선택했다는 것이다. 이는 기독교가 사회적 배경이 아닌 한국에서 만들어진 대중 문화 작품으로는 매우 이례적인 현상이라고 할 수 있다. 과연, 현대 한국 오컬트물에 등장하는 종교의 의미는 무엇인가? 오컬트 영화와 드 라마에 등장하는 종교는 무엇에 대항하기 위한 수단으로 그려지고 있으며, 그것이 등 장하게 된 사회적 배경과 종교에 대한 대중의 기대는 무엇인가? 본 연구는 2015년 이 후 한국에서 제작된 오컬트 영화와 드라마를 텍스트 삼아 이에 등장하는 종교 및 종 교인의 이미지가 어떻게 변하고 있는지를 실천신학의 관점에서 분석하고 해석한다. 더불어 대중매체에 반영된 종교의 이미지가 결코 한국 사회의 시선과 무관하지 않음 을 고려하여, 오늘날의 한국 사회가 가지고 있는 기독교에 대한 해석과 대중이 기대 하는 사회적 역할은 무엇인지를 살펴본다. 마지막으로 앞에서 살펴본 기독교에 대한 대중의 기대에 비교하여 한국 기독교의 과제는 무엇이고, 그것을 실천하기 위해 한국 교회가 해야 할 일은 무엇인지를 제안한다.
