The study examines how gender consciousnesses of middle-aged church women in Korean churches and their possible changes in perception and attidues are disclosed through group dynamics, in which they share their own experiences and understandings, in terms of a ‘focus group discussion counseling’ approach. As the background, the study presupposes two basic problems. One is that feminism has bocome a major discourse in all areas, including theological community, in modern society. The other is that the Korean church, despite being supported by the participation and dedication of women in both quantitative and qualitative terms, is now more silent about feminism than any other sectors of Korean society. Does this silence only mean the attitude of the male-centered teaching authorities that determines the official and superficial position of the church? Or does it show the attitude of female believers, who make up the absolute majority of the church members? If the Korean church's silence on feminism comes from the women themselves, what may it mean? From a feminist point of view, the researcher believes that the space where such a question is raised is also meaningful in terms of counseling, and assumes that the answer to the questions can be meaningfully obtained only through the women’s mutual conversation. Accordingly, the study chose 'focus group discussion counseling' as a performative research method. Unlike conventional information acquisition-oriented ‘focus group research,’ that method is a liberating approach that focuses on the interaction of participants in the conversation, and the resulting awakening and change. The method is also distinguished from conventional counselor-centered group counseling. The ‘focus group discussion counseling’ is a client-centered counseling that is in line with recent postmodernist counseling, philosophical counseling, and feminist counseling. However, ‘focus group discussion counseling’ is also significant in that it is a kind of learning process; the clients do not raise his or her problems at the outset, but gradually experience awakening process of the problem. The study set up the representative profiles of middle-aged church women in Korea, selected research participants according to strictly objective conditions, and drew conclusions through non-intervention discussions and coding analysis of the results.

본 연구는 한국교회 중년여성교인들의 젠더의식이, 중년여성교인들 자신의 경험과 이해를 나누는 집단역동성을 통해 어떻게 드러나며 이에 따라 인식과 태도의 변화 가 능성이 어떠한지를, ‘포커스그룹 토론 상담’ 접근을 통해 알아본다. 연구의 배경으로서 본 연구는 두 가지 기본 문제를 전제한다. 하나는 여성주의는 현대사회에서 신학계를 포함 전영역에서 주요담론으로 자라잡았다는 점이다. 다른 하나는 한국교회는, 양적 질적으로 여성교인들의 참여와 헌신에 의해 지탱되어 왔음에도, 현재 한국사회의 어 느 섹터보다도 여성주의에 관해 침묵한다는 점이다. 이 침묵은 교회의 공식적이고 표 면적인 입장을 결정하는 남성주의 교권의 태도를 뜻할 뿐인가? 아니면 교인의 절대다 수를 차지하는 여성 교인들 자신의 태도를 보여주는가? 여성주의에 대한 한국교회의 침묵이 여성 교인들 자신에게서 나오는 것이라면 그것이 뜻하는 바는 무엇인가? 여성 주의적 관점에서, 본 연구자는 이 같은 질문이 제기되는 공간이 상담학적으로도 중요 하다고 보며, 이 질문에 대한 답은 여성교인 자신들의 상호대화를 통해서만 의미 있 게 얻어질 수 있다고 가정한다. 이에 본 연구는 실행적 연구방법으로서 ‘포커스그룹 토론 상담’을 택했다. 이 방법 은 종래의 정보획득 중심의 ‘포커스그룹 연구’와 달리 참여자들의 대화 속 상호작용과 이에 따른 각성과 변화에 초점을 두는 해방적 접근이다. 또한 이 방법은 기존의 상담 자중심의 집단상담과도 구별된다. ‘포커스그룹 토론 상담’은 근래의 포스트모더니즘 상담, 철학 상담, 여성주의 상담 등과 맥을 같이 하는, 내담자 주체적 상담이기 때문 이다. ‘포커스그룹 토론 상담’은 내담자가 처음부터 자신의 문제를 제기하는 것이 아 니라, 문제의 각성 과정까지 포함한다는 점에서 일종의 학습과정과 같은 접근이란 점 에서도 특별하다. 본 연구는 한국교회 중년여성교인들의 대표적 프로필을 설정하고 이에 부합하는 연구참여자들을 엄밀히 객관적 조건에 의해 선정하였고, 참여자들의 개입되지 않은 토론과 그 결과에 대한 코딩 분석을 거쳐 결론을 도출하였다.
