The purpose of study was to investigate dry eye syndrome caused by smartphone overuse. In previous studies, subjective evaluation based on questionnaires was mainly used, but this study applied a quantified test method for dry eye syndrome. Changes in the tear film on the ocular surface that occurred after overuse of a smartphone were investigated with quantified values. In the preliminary examination, BUT, Schirmer I test, and McMonnies test, which are known as traditional dry eye test methods, were performed, and those classified as dry eye syndrome were excluded from the tests. Subjects classified as the normal eye group watched movie contents on their smartphones for 100 minutes, and then filmed with a thermal imaging camera to check the temperature changes of the ocular surface and the conjunctiva. It was confirmed that the temperature change occurred rapidly on the ocular surface after overuse of the smartphone. Changes in the central and superior regions of the ocular surface were statistically significant(p<0.05). Concentrating and overusing a smartphone continuously can cause dry eye syndrome by rapidly evaporating the tear film on the ocular surface.

본 연구의 목적은 스마트폰 과사용으로 발생되는 안구건조증 증상에 대해서 알아보고자 하여 연구를 시작하 였다. 과거 연구에는 설문조사에 의존한 주관적인 안구건조증 평가가 주로 활용되었는데 안구건조증에 대한 정량화된 검사법을 적용하여 스마트폰 과사용 후 발생하는 안구표면의 눈물막 변화를 정량화된 수치로 알아보고 객관적으로 조사하고자 하였다. 예비검사에서는 전통적인 안구건조증 검사법으로 알려진 눈물막파괴시간, 쉬르머테스트, 맥모니 테스트를 시행하였고 해당 검사에서 안구건조증으로 분류되는 자를 제외하였다. 정상안 군으로 분류된 대상자는 스마 트폰에서 영화 콘텐츠를 100분간 시청한 후 열화상카메라로 촬영하여 안구표면과 검결막의 온도변화를 확인하였다. 스마트폰 과사용 이후에 안구표면에서 온도변화가 빠르게 발생한 것을 확인하였다. 안구표면의 중심부와 위쪽 영역부 위의 변화는 통계학적으로 유의하였다(p<0.05). 스마트폰을 연속적으로 집중하여 과사용하는 행동은 안구표면의 눈물 막을 빠르게 증발시켜 안구건조증을 유발시킬 수 있다.
