There has been some discussion about allowing baptized children to participate in the Eucharist before they are confirmed, since the Eucharist is a communal meal given to the baptized. More denominations are now practicing infant communion. But even within these denominations, there is reluctance, unwillingness, or opposition to children participating in communion. Although many reasons are given for their reluctance and opposition, they can be boiled down to two main reasons based on 1 Corinthians 11: “discerning the body” and “teaching about the Eucharist. In this paper, I make several arguments regarding the practice of the Eucharist with children: The practice of the Eucharist with children is a proper implementation of Paul's teaching on “discerning the body” in 1 Corinthians 11. Since the sacrament is a special communal meal given to the community of the baptized, Paul’s teaching on the discernment of the body must be interpreted communally; the practice of the Eucharist with children can be an important and effective place for children and their parents to learn about and become familiar with the sacrament; the practice of the sacrament with children can be an important way of forming the church into a countercultural community; and it must be accompanied by post-Eucharistic teaching.

성찬은 세례받은 자에게 허락된 공동식사이기에, 유아/아동 세례를 받은 이들도 성찬에 참여케 해야 한다는 논의가 지난 수십 년 동안 있 었고, 오늘날 유아/아동 성찬을 시행하는 교단의 수도 점차 많아지고 있다. 그러나 그러한 교단들 내에도 어린이들의 성찬 참여를 꺼리며 (적극적으로) 시행하지 않거나 반대하는 교회들도 적지 않다. 많은 이 유가 언급되지만, 고린도전서 11장을 토대로‘몸의 분별’과 그것을 위 한‘성찬 교육’으로 수렴될 수 있을 것 같다. 본 연구자는 이 논문을 통 해 아동 성찬 시행과 관련하여 몇 가지를 주장하고자 한다: 아동 성찬 시행은 고린도전서 11장의‘몸의 분별’에 대한 바울의 가르침을 올바 르게 실천하는 것이다. 성찬은 세례받은 자들의 공동체라는 교회에 허 락된 특별한 공동식사이기에 바울이 말한 몸의 분별은 공동체적으로 해석해야 하기 때문이다; 아동 성찬 시행은 아이들 뿐 아니라 그들의 부모가 성찬을 배우고 익숙해질 수 있는 중요하고 효과적인 장이 될 수 있다; 또한 아동 성찬 시행은 교회를 대항 문화적인 공동체로 형성하는 중요한 통로가 된다; 그리고 성찬 후 교육은 함께 실행되어야 한다.
