The Painting of Amitabha Buddha Triad is the only remaining wall painting from the 18th century among the wall paintings created on the interior western wall of Eungjinjeon at Tongdosa. This artwork provides important data for investigating the characteristics of Eungjinjeon during its reconstruction. The Amitabha Buddha triad is a standing statue, and auspicious clouds and a lotus pond are expressed below this triad presumably to represent Sukhavati. Beneath Amitabha Buddha, there is a portrayal of a reborn person who appears to be a Buddhist monk and sits in a lotus flower. The right hand of this Buddha emits the sparkle of light to the reborn person. This scene shows the active use of woodblock prints of Buddhist illustrations to represent the world of Amitabha Buddha, particularly with a focus on a combination between jabsanggwan, the 13th meditation out of the 16 Meditations of Amitabha Buddha, and gupum-yeonji, which are two concepts introduced in woodblock prints of Buddhist illustrations reflecting the Pure Land ideology. This study determined the period of creation of the Painting of Amitabha Buddha Triad by comparing its characteristics with trends of Buddhist works that occurred in Tongdosa in the mid-18th century, mural paintings on other temple halls at Tongdosa, and existing Buddhist paintings. The analytic result supported the claim from the Buddhist book Buljongchalyaksa that the reconstruction and painting of Eungjin-jeon occurred in 1761. Furthermore, the Painting of Amitabha Buddha Triad was created by Buddhist monk painters, including Doo Hoon and Jeong Chong, who entered Tongdosa during the period of the large-scale Jungrojeon Buddhist work and considered some initial Buddhist paintings of Lim Han in the creation process. For this reason, this mural painting is evaluated as a significant example of using initial Buddhist paintings for the creation of mural paintings. In addition, the location of mural paintings drawn is significantly important due to the characteristics of these paintings. In this regard, this study examined the cases of the paintings of Amitabha Buddha Triad drawn at the western side or at the right side of the main Buddha statue in a temple hall. Based on the analytic result, this study confirmed the willingness of painters of the Painting of Amitabha Buddha Triad at Eungjinjeon for placing Buddhist statues and mural paintings in the temple hall to represent the World of Ten Directions (十方世界). This study has significance in that it analyzed the background for creation of the Painting of Amitabha Buddha Triad located at Eungjinjeon in Tongdosa, a mural painting drawn in a temple in the mid-18th century, and its characteristics. It is expected that the findings of this study will be effectively used in follow-up research on comprehensively investigating mural paintings drawn in temples during the period of late Joseon.

통도사 응진전 내부 서측면 벽에 그려진 〈아미타여래삼존도〉는 응진전 내부에 남아있는 벽화 중 18세기에 조성된 유일한 벽화로 응진전의 중창 당시의 모습을 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 자료이다. 아미타삼존 모두 입상이며, 아래쪽에는 극락을 도상화한 듯 瑞雲과 연지를 표현했다. 아미타여래 아래쪽에는 한 송이 연꽃 속에 승려의 모습을 한 왕생자가 앉아 있고 아미타여래의 오른손에는 왕생자를 향해 광채를 내뿜었다. 이 장면은 정토계 변상판화에 나타나는 대표적인 두 장면인 제13 ‘잡상관’ 과 ‘구품연지’ 를 조합하여 아미타세계의 구현을 위해 변상판화를 적극 활용했음을 알 수 있다. 벽화의 조성시기는 18세기 중엽 통도사의 불사 동향과, 다른 전각의 벽화, 현존하는 불화들과의 비교를 통해 『불종찰약사』의 중창 단확 시기인 1761년을 뒷받침하였다. 또 1759년 통도사 중로전 대 불사 때 통도사로 유입된 화승 두훈, 정총 등에 의해 임한의 초본 일부를 공유하여 벽화가 제작되었는데, 이는 벽화 조성에 불화의 초본을 활용하였다는 점에서 매우 의미 있다. 더불어 벽화의 특성상 그려지는 위치가 가지는 의미는 매우 중요하므로 내부 서측면, 즉 본존불의 오른쪽에 아미타여래삼존도가 그려진 사례들을 통해 전각 내부에 불상과 벽화로 시방세계(十方世界)를 구현하려는 의지를 확인하였다. 〈통도사 응진전 아미타여래삼존도〉는 18세기 중반 사찰벽화의 일부로 조성배경과 특징에 대한 고찰은 매우 의미 있는 일이라고 생각되며, 향후 조선후기 사찰벽화의 종합적인 연구에 일조하기를 바란다.
