As Korea rapidly evolves into a multicultural society, negative prejudice and discrimination against foreign immigrants have emerged as major social problems. The aim of this research is to systematically examine the impact of multicultural ideology on Koreans' attitudes toward foreign immigrants and explore potential solutions to mitigate the negative attitudes. Previous studies conducted in Western countries suggest that embracing multicultural ideology can foster understanding and respect for cultural diversity and differences, which in turn can help reduce social inequality and promote positive attitudes toward different cultures. However, multicultural ideology may be viewed as a threat to social cohesion among indigenous people, as it assumes that individuals should accept the cultures of foreign immigrants. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate whether multicultural ideology can be beneficial for attitudes toward foreign immigrants in Korean society where a strong emphasis has traditionally placed on cultural unity. Additionally, this research explores the circumstances under which multicultural ideology can be positively associated with attitudes toward foreign immigrants, and examines the moderating effect of national identity. To achieve these objectives, a survey study was conducted with a sample of 247 Korean adults. The results revealed a significant relationship between acceptance of multicultural ideology and positive attitudes toward foreign immigrants. Furthermore, national identity was found to moderate the positive association between multicultural ideology and attitudes toward foreign immigrants, indicating that a strong national identity weakened the positive impact of multicultural ideology on attitudes toward foreign immigrants. Based on these findings, we discuss how multicultural ideology and national identity can contribute to improving negative attitudes toward foreign immigrants in Korea.

한국사회가 빠르게 다문화 국가 되면서, 이주외국인에 대한 부정적 편견과 차별이 주요한 사회문제로 부각되었다. 본 연구는 다문화이데올로기 수용이 이주외국인에 대 한 태도에 미치는 효과를 체계적으로 밝힘으로써 이주외국인에 대한 부정적 태도를 감 소시키는 방안 탐색을 목표로 한다. 서구 국가들의 연구에 따르면, 다문화이데올로기 수용은 문화적 다양성과 문화 간 차이를 존중하여 사회적 불평등을 완화하고 타문화에 대한 긍정적 태도에 도움이 되는 것으로 알려져 있다. 하지만, 다문화이데올로기는 타 문화의 적극적 수용을 전제로 하기 때문에, 사회적 응집력에 위협이 될 수 있다. 따라 서 한국처럼 문화적 통일성을 중시하는 사회에서도 다문화이데올로기가 이주외국인들 에 대한 태도에 긍정적 효과를 가지는지 확인해볼 필요가 있다. 또한, 다문화이데올로 기 수용이 이주외국인에 대한 긍정적 태도로 이어지는 조건을 알아보기 위해 국가정체 성의 조절 효과를 검증하였다. 이를 위해 한국 성인 247명을 대상으로 설문조사를 하 였다. 연구 결과, 다문화이데올로기는 한국사회에서도 이주외국인에 대한 태도에 유의 한 긍정적 효과를 가지는 것으로 드러났다. 또한, 이러한 다문화이데올로기의 긍정적 효과는 국가정체성에 의해 조절되었는데, 국가정체성이 강할수록 다문화이데올로기가 이주외국인에 대한 태도에 미치는 긍정적 효과가 약화되는 것으로 관찰되었다. 끝으로 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 문화이데올로기와 국가정체성이 이주외국인에 대한 태도에 미치는 영향력에 대해 논의하였다.
