The influence of media is undoubtedly tremendous nowadays regardless of mode of media. In that context, the necessity of media ethics is indispensable to keep pace with the influence. Traditionally, there are two main ethical perspectives in media ethics. One is deontological ethics represented by Kant, the other teleological ethics known as utilitarianism. Both perspectives are called normative ethics in that they could provide behavioral standards. However, both perspectives are act-oriented rather than actor-oriented. Here comes the need for introducing the virtue ethics elaborated by Aristotle. Aristotle emphasized the importance of virtue and state of happiness. To be an ethical person is not limited to his or her act. Because there are discrepancy between attitudes and actual behavior, one must cultivate his or her virtue and internalize it. Though virtue ethics could not provide definite answers to journalist in ethical quandary, it is very useful tool for ethical journalists to immerse in media ethics. Ethics-minded journalists can make an ethical decision-making even in highly controversial situations.

현대사회에서 미디어의 영향력은 매우 크다. 그러나 막강한 영향력에 걸 맞는 윤리적 기준을 미디어가 얼마나 지켜왔는가에 대해서는 회의적인 시각이 많다. 언론윤리분야는 언론의 윤리적 이슈에 초점을 맞추어 특히 언론인의 취재나 보도 상의 비윤리적 행위에 관심을 두어왔다. 그 중 대표적인 윤리학 이론은 칸트로 대표되는 의무윤리학이고 다른 입장은 공리주의 윤리학이다. 이 두 윤리학의 입장은 해당 기자나 언론사가 언론윤리의 의무를 얼마나 잘 지키는가 혹은 그 행위가 최대다수의 최대행복이라는 원칙에 얼마나 가까운가를 기준으로 윤리적 판단을 수행했다. 이는 다시 말해 당사자의 행위를 윤리적 판단의 주된 기준으로 삼는다는 의미이다. 그러나 이러한 입장은 행위자의 덕성함양이라는 윤리학의 다른 주요한 축을 소홀히 하는 결과를 낳게 된다. 이 연구에서는 행위자의 덕성함양에 주안점을 두는 아리스토텔레스의 덕 윤리학을 중심으로 이를 언론윤리분야에 도입해야 하는 필요성에 대해 논의한다. 이를 통해 언론인의 윤리의식을 높이기 위한 하나의 방법으로 언론인의 덕성개발과 윤리교육의 필요성이 제시될 것이다.
