The purpose of this article is to analyze the political philosophy of Toegye in relation to the Libal(理發, activity of Li in Human mind)·Lidong(理動, activity of Li in cosmology)·Lido(理到, activity of Li in object of recognition) theory, and to reveal the practical implications contained therein. In Neo-Confucianism, the theory of selfcultivation and Human Nature(心性) are justified from the theory of ligi(理氣), which is their metaphysical basis, and the theory of selfcultivation and Human Nature again leads to the political philosophy. These characteristics need to be considered in the analysis of Toegye's political philosophy. As is well known, Libal·Lidong·Lido refers to the activity of Li in the theory of selfcultivation, Human Nature, and political philosophy. Therefore, in this paper, the meaning of Li in each theory is analyzed and its implications in political philosophy are examined. Toegye's political philosophy can be summarized as Sage Learning in one word, and Sage Learning is again summarized as the selfcultivation of the monarch. The superficial form of this can be evaluated as showing a passive attitude in political participation while inheriting the moral politics of Neo-Confucianism. However, in view of the characteristics of Li-Hak(理學) that insisted on activity of Li, his Sage Learning has practical implications for establishing a social order based on pure li.

이 글의 목적은 퇴계의 정치사상을 리발·리동·리도설과의 상관성 속에서 분석함으로 써, 그 안에 담긴 실천적 함의를 밝히는데 있다. 성리학에서 이기론은 심성론과 수양론의 형이상학적 정당성을 제공하고, 심성론과 수양론은 다시 경세론으로 귀결되는 특징을 갖 는다. 그렇기에 퇴계의 경세론, 즉 정치사상에 관한 엄밀한 분석을 위해서는 이러한 특징 들을 고려할 필요성이 제기된다. 본고에서는 리발·리동·리도설이 각각 심성론, 이기론, 수양론에서 리의 능동성을 긍정한 이론이라고 파악한다. 그리하여 각 이론들에 나타난 능 동성의 의미를 살펴보고 정치사상과의 관련성 속에서 그 함의를 분석한다. 퇴계의 정치사상은 성학으로 요약될 수 있으며, 성학은 다시 군심의 수양론인 敬으로 요약된다. 이것의 표면적인 형태는 퇴계가 성리학의 도덕 정치를 근본적 차원에서 계승하 여 정치 참여에 있어 소극적 태도를 보이는 것으로 비춰질 수 있다. 하지만 리의 능동성 관점에서 그의 성학을 재조명하면 순선한 리에 근거하여 사회질서를 건립하기 위한 실천 적 함의를 새롭게 발견할 수 있다.
