A Study of the Creation of a Social Satire Installation Work using Data and a Turntable - Focusing on an Artwork Toccata: The Soul of Fantasy

In this paper, the author examines the conceptualization, implementation, refinement, and implications of Toccata: The Soul of Fantasy, a unique social satirical installation using a fish, a turntable, and data to explore the sociocritical role of art in the 21st century. Version 1 of the artwork playfully satirized the Korean neoliberal desire for apartments using color information from an LP record visualizing apartment prices in Seoul and a turntable to play improvised sounds by fish. To this end, the author established toccata, apartment prices, LP records and the turntable, improvisation and randomness, and the fish as the main concepts of the artwork and connected them through the realization of the work. Version 2 was modified to a standalone embedded system that was optimized without the participation of the fish and switched to a general audio device with more sophisticated improvisational sound effects to make the work more manageable and to improve the stability of the system. Version 1 was significant in attempting a different and playful satire by associating a fish, humans, and objects. However, it has limitations in that it did not improve Version 1 into a stable and efficient artwork system that enables close communication between nature, humans, and objects, and it still needs completely to resolve the difficulty of the audience's understanding of the artwork. The transformation to Version 2 has the drawbacks of weakening the original intention of the work and compromising with the realities of our art world. Nonetheless, it is significant in that it exercises the communicative rationality of creating, displaying, and enjoying art, and performs and shares the ongoing communicative actions of art.
