The purpose of this study is to shed the light on the dynamic relationship that developed between the German unification of October 3, 1990 and the European Union (EU), being launched toward the economic union in November 1993. This paper will investigate the simultaneous process and internal dynamics of the mutual contradiction between Germany's unification, which means strengthened nationalism, and the launch of the European Union of deepening transnational integration. Most of the existing studies have relied on a method of understanding German unification as an extension of European integration, so one-way explanations prevailed. The major thesis of this study starts from right here, and it begins with the intention of investigating the dynamic interrelationship that proceeded into the dialectical relationship between these two historical incidents. In addition to the existing propositions accepted by many researchers, the study aims to explain the relationship between the two more accurately by adding that German unification has affected the qualitative change in the European integration. The main theoretical pillar of this study is not only to reveal that unified Germany is a product of the European integration process, but also to emphasize that German unification played a role of expediting the deepening of the European integration. The German unification process and the launch of the European Union are two sides of one coin. The German unification and the launch of the European Union have mutually affected and developed amid the strengthening of German nationalism and the deepening of transnational integration.

본 연구는 1990년 10월 3일의 독일 통일과 1993년 11월 경제동맹(economic union)을 향해 출범한 유럽연합(European Union: EU) 사이에 전개되었던 역동적인 관계를 밝히는 데에 목적이 있다. 강화된 민족주의를 의미하는 독일의 통일과 초국가적인 통합의 심화를 뜻하는 유럽연합 출범 사이의 상호모순적 현상이 유럽에서 동시적으로 진행된 과정과 내적 동학을 구명해 보고자 한다. 기존의 연구들은 대부분 독일의 통일을 유럽통합의 연장선에서 이해하는 방식에 의존해 왔고, 때문에 일방향적인 설명이 우세했다. 본 연구의 문제의식은 바로 여기에 있었고, 양자의 변증법적 관계 속에 진행된 역동적인 상호관계를 구명하려는 의도에서 시작했다. 다수의 연구자가 수용하는 기존의 명제에 더해 독일 통일이 유럽통합의 질적인 변화에 영향을 미쳤다는 점을 추가함으로써 양자의 상호관계를 보다 더 적확하게 설명하고자 한다. 본 연구의 핵심은 통일 독일이 유럽통합 전개 과정의 산물임을 밝히는 데 머물지 않고, 독일 통일이 유럽통합을 심화시키는 데 매개 역할을 톡톡히 했다는 점을 강조하는 데 있다. 독일 통일 과정과 유럽연합 출범은 동전의 양면 관계이다. 공간적인 의미에서 독일 민족주의가 강화됨과 아울러 초국가적인 통합의 심화가 동시에 이루어지는 속에서 독일 통일과 유럽연합 출범은 상호 영향을 미치면서 변화하고 발전해 왔다.
